Unraveling timescale-dependent Fe-MOFs crystal evolution for catalytic ozonation reactivity modulation

Qian Hu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated an overlooked compromise between porous architecture and active site exposure of Fe-MOFs in modulating catalytic ozonation reactivity. By prolonging crystallization time, the surface area of MIL-53(Fe) decreased dramatically while the density of accessible active site increased, allowing for facile modulation of catalytic ozonation reactivity. MIL-53(Fe) with the highest reactivity could effectively degrade a broad spectrum of emerging and refractory organic pollutants, indicating its potential for environmental applications.

Influence of Wurtzite ZnO Morphology on Piezophototronic Effect in Photocatalysis

Xiaowen Su et al.

Summary: It has been found that the piezoelectric property of wurtzite phase ZnO, a typical photocatalyst, can enhance the photocatalytic activity by helping separating photo-generated charge carriers. In this study, four different morphologies of ZnO were prepared and the photocatalytic activity for degrading Rhodamine B was compared under the same mechanical energy source provided by ultrasound. The ZnO nanowire photocatalyst showed a significant improvement in photocatalytic efficiency, indicating that the morphology-related piezophototronic effect positively affected the separation of photo-generated charge carriers and the utilization of charge carriers.

Novel composite of Zn/Ti-layered double hydroxide coupled with MXene for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceuticals

Anna Grzegorska et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid photocatalyst of Zn/Ti layered double hydroxide (LDH) coupled with MXene-Ti3C2 was synthesized and applied for the photocatalytic degradation of acetaminophen and ibuprofen. The composite with 2.5 wt% MXene showed the highest activity in degrading the pharmaceuticals, and the introduction of interfering ions did not affect their removal efficiency. The possible mechanism for the degradation was proposed based on various analyses. This research highlights the feasibility and novelty of using LDH/MXene composites for the treatment of pharmaceuticals.

Photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen using titanium oxide: insights into the mechanism and preferential attack of radicals

Maicon Oliveira Miranda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of ibuprofen using titanium dioxide as a photocatalyst, revealing that the OH radicals preferentially attack specific sites on the ibuprofen molecule for efficient degradation and decontamination. Different by-products, such as 4-isobutylacetophenone, were identified during the process. Mechanistic proposals suggest that ibuprofen undergoes a series of elementary reactions involving various radicals, with the OH radical playing a key role in oxidation. The study also demonstrated that the OH radical attacks regions of high electron density on the ibuprofen molecule, achieving successful degradation.
