Synergistic effects of ozone/peroxymonosulfate for isothiazolinone biocides degradation: Kinetics, synergistic performance and influencing factors*

Zheng-Wei Yang et al.

Summary: The synergistic effects of ozone and peroxymonosulfate on the degradation of isothiazolinone biocides were studied. The results showed that the synergistic ozonation process significantly improved the degradation efficiency, mainly through the involvement of hydroxyl radicals and oxidation. Solution pH, chloride ions, and bicarbonate were found to influence the process.

Parabens as emerging contaminants: Environmental persistence, current practices and treatment processes

Francisca Vale et al.

Summary: Water contamination by emerging contaminants, such as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals, is a significant environmental problem. One specific group of EDCs, parabens, widely used in daily products, poses health risks, especially to the endocrine system. Current wastewater treatment technologies are not effective in removing these contaminants, requiring innovative approaches. Microalgae bioremediation shows promise in removing parabens, but large-scale applications face challenges.

Removal of methylisothiazolinone biocide from wastewater by VUV/UV advanced oxidation process: Kinetics, mechanisms and toxicity

Nan Huang et al.

Summary: Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) is efficiently degraded by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV)/ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, with the presence of .center dot & nbsp;OH as the main oxidant. The degradation efficiency of MIT under VUV/UV irradiation is higher than under UV irradiation, and is influenced by solution pH and the concentration of CO32- /HCO3-. The study also identified the main degradation mechanisms of MIT as sulfur atom oxidation and hydroxyl addition, with VUV/UV degradation being an effective method to remove MIT toxicity.

Complexes of Fe(III)-organic pollutants that directly activate Fenton-like processes under visible light

Renli Yin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a new cost-effective LMCT activation approach based on internal charge transfers, enabling the transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ without the need for additional ligands or agents. This approach significantly enhances the degradation of antibiotic pollutants under visible light compared to conventional methods.

Contribution of temperature and photon absorption on solar photo-Fenton mediated by Fe3+-NTA for CEC removal in municipal wastewater

P. Soriano-Molina et al.

Summary: The solar photo-Fenton process with ferric nitrilotriacetate has potential for removing contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) from municipal effluents, but understanding the effects of temperature and photon absorption on the reaction mechanism is crucial. Experimental results show that increasing liquid depth can improve treatment capacity under certain conditions, providing important knowledge for photoreactor design and continuous flow operation.

Enhancement of Iron-Based Photo-Driven Processes by the Presence of Catechol Moieties

Javier Moreno-Andres et al.

Summary: The study found that catechol can effectively assist the photo-Fenton system and partly promote the photo-induced S2O82- system, with the impact highly depending on salinity. The photo-Fenton reaction was able to enhance the degradation of all six CECs, while the S2O82--based process showed moderate enhancement for certain CECs.
