Metal-Based Nanoparticles: Antibacterial Mechanisms and Biomedical Application

Domenico Franco et al.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has led to a search for alternative antibacterial agents. Nanoparticles have emerged as a promising alternative due to their intrinsic antibacterial activity. However, the mechanisms underlying their action are still not well understood, limiting their use in clinical applications. This review provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial activity of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, as well as the strategies employed by bacteria to develop resistance. Additionally, recent biomedical applications of these nanoparticles with antibacterial activity are discussed.

Organic and inorganic antibacterial approaches in combating bacterial infection for biomedical application

Syafiqah Saidin et al.

Summary: This review paper explores the potential applications of inorganic and organic antibacterial agents in biomedical settings, discussing their mechanisms of action on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Inorganic agents like silver, copper, gold, and zinc release ions to target Gram-negative bacteria, while organic agents like chlorhexidine and triclosan disrupt biochemical pathways in Gram-positive bacteria. The selection of antibacterial agents for biomaterials should consider their effective mechanisms and the specific bacterial strains they are targeting.

Antibacterial approaches in tissue engineering using metal ions and nanoparticles: From mechanisms to applications

Maria Godoy-Gallardo et al.

Summary: Bacterial infection of implanted scaffolds is a serious threat, especially with the rise of multidrug resistance. Metal ions and ion nanoparticles have shown potential in reducing or eliminating bacteria through mechanisms like oxidative stress induction and disruption of biomolecules. Combining different metal ions and nanoparticles can lead to synergistic effects and improved microbial killing, with reduced potential side effects to the host.

The Influence of Nd and Sm on the Structure and Properties of Sol-Gel-Derived TiO2 Powders

Albena Bachvarova-Nedelcheva et al.

Summary: TiO2 nanopowders modified by Nd and Sm were prepared using the sol-gel technique. Samples containing Sm were amorphous up to 300 degrees C, while those with Nd preserved a mixed organic-inorganic amorphous structure at higher temperatures. Samples heated at 500 degrees Celsius showed photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation and exhibited good antimicrobial activity against E. coli K12 and B. subtilis.
