Comparative anatomical analysis of dopamine systems in Mus musculus and Peromyscus californicus

Justin Buck et al.

Summary: The study found unexpected similarities and differences in the anatomical organization of dopamine systems between Peromyscus californicus and Mus musculus. While the sex difference in dopamine neurons at the anteroventral periventricular nucleus of hypothalamus is present in both species, major interspecies differences are found in the ventral midbrain and striatum of P. californicus, resembling the primate brain more closely. These findings suggest that P. californicus could serve as a unique model organism for studying the evolution and disorders of dopamine systems in mammals.

Midbrain projection to the basolateral amygdala encodes anxiety-like but not depression-like behaviors

Carole Morel et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine neurons projecting to the basolateral amygdala (BLA) selectively control anxiety-like behaviors, but not depression-like behaviors. These findings provide important insights into the neural correlates of anxiety and depression.

Genetically identified amygdala-striatal circuits for valence-specific behaviors

Xian Zhang et al.

Summary: Researchers have discovered two classes of 'hardwired' neurons in the BLA, positive-valence and negative-valence neurons, which express Fezf2 and have distinct connectivity. These neurons drive punishment avoidance and reward seeking behaviors by receiving inputs from separate sensory and limbic areas, and conveying information to the nucleus accumbens and olfactory tubercle.

Sex differences in anxiety and depression: circuits and mechanisms

Debra A. Bangasser et al.

Summary: Male-dominated preclinical studies on anxiety and depression are being addressed to include females, leading to the discovery of new mechanisms and treatment targets. Epidemiological sex differences in these disorders are well-known, but the underlying circuits and mechanisms contributing to these differences still lack attention due to historical exclusion of females in research. Comparing the sexes may help in the discovery of novel therapeutics.
