Biochar-based fertilizer effects on crop productivity: a meta-analysis

Leonidas Carrijo Azevedo Melo et al.

Summary: The study shows that biochar-based fertilizers (BBFs) can increase crop productivity at very low application rates compared to conventional fertilizers. Cluster analysis reveals the potential of BBFs to enhance crop productivity in soils that are not responsive to conventional fertilizers. Additionally, BBFs produced at higher heating temperatures and with higher carbon content have a more pronounced effect on crop yield.

One-year monitoring of nitrogen forms after the application of various types of biochar on different soils

Esther Marti et al.

Summary: Biochar, a carbon-rich product from biomass pyrolysis, can enhance soil fertility and reduce nitrogen loss, greenhouse gas emissions. Different biochars have varied effects on soil nitrogen forms, primarily influenced by soil properties.

A potential Mg-enriched biochar fertilizer: Excellent slow-release performance and release mechanism of nutrients

Weichen Luo et al.

Summary: The Mg-enriched biochar fertilizer (MBF) demonstrated excellent slow-release performances of total P and N, with mechanisms involving Mg-P precipitates and 'P-trap' effect of MgO for P-release, as well as confinement effect and electrostatic attraction for N-release. MBF significantly promoted corn growth and enhanced nutrient uptake efficiency, suggesting promising potential for sustainable agriculture with multiple environmental benefits.
