Controlling the Anionic Ratio and Gradient in Kesterite Technology

Jacob Andrade-Arvizu et al.

Summary: Accurate control of anionic composition is crucial in the formation of chalcogenide solid solutions. This work presents a simple and innovative technique for achieving anionic compositional grading in kesterite absorbers. The technique involves preparing a pure sulfide absorber followed by the synthesis of a pure selenide part on top of it. By adjusting processing conditions, the anionic composition can be perfectly controlled or a compositional gradient can be obtained. This technique has the potential to improve compositional reproducibility and enable band gap grading in kesterites.

Halide Perovskites: Advanced Photovoltaic Materials Empowered by a Unique Bonding Mechanism

Matthias Wuttig et al.

Summary: Halide perovskites, such as ABX(3) compounds, are promising PV materials with favorable optoelectronic properties governed by the B-X bond. The unique metavalent bonding in halide perovskites, involving the sharing of one p-electron between adjacent atoms, results in pronounced optical absorption and small effective masses of charge carriers. Understanding this bonding mechanism provides insight for the design of efficient PV materials.

Tin-based halide perovskite materials: properties and applications

Mahdi Malekshahi Byranvand et al.

Summary: Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskite materials have attracted significant research interest, particularly in the field of photovoltaics. However, the toxicity of lead in these materials limits their applications, prompting the search for alternatives. Tin-based perovskites have shown the highest potential as substitutes, but challenges in stability, safety, and commercialization still need to be addressed.

Flexible Titanium Nitride/Germanium-Tin Photodetectors Based on Sub-Bandgap Absorption

Shu An et al.

Summary: This study reports an enhanced performance of flexible TiN/GeSn photodetectors based on sub-bandgap absorption. Integration of TiN and GeSn forms a TiN/GeSn heterojunction, extending the photodetection wavelength and enhancing light absorption capability within the near-infrared region. External uniaxial strain can further increase the responsivity, showing potential for improving flexibility in NIR photodetection.

The same chemical state of carbon gives rise to two peaks in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

G. Greczynski et al.

Summary: Chemical state analysis in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) relies on assigning well-defined binding energy values to core level electrons originating from atoms in particular bonding configurations. Here, direct evidence is presented for the violation of this paradigm, as the C 1s peak due to C-C/C-H bonded atoms from adventitious carbon (AdC) layers splits into two distinctly different contributions. This finding exposes fundamental problems with the reliability of reported XPS data and suggests discontinuing the use of adventitious carbon in XPS.
