Electrochemical Patterning of Cu Current Collectors: An Enabler for Pure Silicon Anodes in High-Energy Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jonas Schlaier et al.

Summary: This study reports a facile and scalable Cu electrodeposition process to tailor the topography of Cu current collectors for the directed formation of columnar Si anodes. By adjusting the Cu-ECD parameters, the topography of the current collectors can be controlled, resulting in a significant increase in cycling stability of the Si anodes.

Indentation modulus extrapolation and thickness estimation of ta-C coatings from nanoindentation

L. Lorenz et al.

Summary: A new empirical fit model named "sigmoid" is proposed in this study, which outperforms existing fit models in terms of goodness of fit and stability based on a large number of nanoindentation measurements on ta-C coatings. Additionally, it is demonstrated that the fit parameter of the sigmoid model directly correlates with the coating thickness, allowing for a new approach to determine ta-C coating thickness.

Revealing the Failure Mechanism of Partially Lithiated Silicon-Dominant Anodes Based on Microscale Silicon Particles

Stefan Haufe et al.

Summary: The partial lithiation of silicon microparticles in LIB anodes is a promising material concept with high capacity and rate capability, but is currently limited by cycling stability and volume change issues, restricting its market potential. This study identifies the continuous formation of SEI as the main failure mechanism, while particle decoupling plays a role at low discharge voltages. Improving cell performance involves optimizing electronic particle connection and developing enhanced electrolyte systems or pre-lithiation strategies to enhance the cycle stability of silicon-based LIB cells.

Generalized approach of scratch adhesion testing and failure classification for hard coatings using the concept of relative area of delamination and properly scaled indenters

Martin Zawischa et al.

Summary: This article examines the failure characteristics and adhesion evaluation of hydrogen-free amorphous carbon coatings through scratch testing with different indenter tip radii. The study shows that the failure mode of the coating can be reliably predicted and adjusted by the choice of the indenter radius, with predominant spallations and bending cracks being the main failure modes. The concept of adhesion assessment by comparing the relative size of delaminated area was expanded for variable indenter sizes and failure mechanisms, allowing for direct comparison of scratch results for a wide range of coating thicknesses.

Nanostructured Si-C Composites As High-Capacity Anode Material For All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Stephanie Poetke et al.

Summary: The silicon carbon void structures (Si-C) show enhanced performance and lifetime compared to bare silicon nanoparticles in all-solid-state batteries. Kinetic limitations in the anode lead to a lowered voltage plateau in full cells compared to half cells. The solid electrolyte does not penetrate the Si-C void structure, resulting in higher initial coulombic efficiency.

Recent Insights into Rate Performance Limitations of Li-ion Batteries

Christian Heubner et al.

Summary: Improving the fast charging capabilities and driving range of electric vehicles is a major goal in Li-ion battery research. Fundamental understanding of performance limiting factors at the electrode level is crucial for optimizing materials, electrode design, and cell architectures. Analytical and semi-empirical models are emphasized for understanding specific performance limiting factors of electrodes and discussing promising improvement strategies for liquid electrolyte-based Li-ion batteries.
