Influence of Land Use and Topographic Factors on Soil Organic Carbon Stocks and Their Spatial and Vertical Distribution

Kyle W. Blackburn et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon plays a critical role in major ecosystem processes, agriculture, and climate mitigation. This study examined the distribution of SOC stock based on land use and topography and assessed the scalability of SOC stock predictions. The results showed that land use, topography, and soil depth were related to SOC stock distribution, and accuracy predictions were influenced by data source.

Urbanization degree rather than methanotrophic abundance decreases soil CH4 uptake

Mingyue Zhang et al.

Summary: Urbanization significantly decreases soil CH4 uptake, with a greater inhibition observed at higher levels of urbanization. The degree of urbanization explains large variations in soil CH4 uptake and decouples the relationship between methanotrophic abundance and soil CH4 uptake. Incorporating urbanization effects into Earth system models is crucial for more accurate estimation of the global CH4 budget.

Microbial necromass as the source of soil organic carbon in global ecosystems

Baorong Wang et al.

Summary: Microbial necromass contributes significantly to SOC sequestration, with higher contributions in grassland and forest soils compared to cropland soils. Fungal necromass has a larger contribution to SOC than bacterial necromass, with the ratio of fungal:bacterial necromass increasing from croplands to forests. Additionally, factors such as temperature and soil pH affect the accumulation of fungal and bacterial necromass in different ecosystems.

Spatial variation and distribution of soil organic carbon in an urban ecosystem from high-density sampling

Pingping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study collected soil samples in Xi'an City to investigate the spatial variations and distributions of soil organic carbon, identifying main driving factors of SOC density and comparing different interpolation methods in predicting spatial distributions of SOCD. The findings provided important insights into the global carbon cycle influenced by urban soils and serve as a critical guide to land management in urban areas.
