Prospective analysis of spatial heterogeneity influence on the concordance of remote sensing drought indices: a case of semi-arid agrosystems in Morocco (Moulouya and Tensift watersheds)

Ismaguil Hanade Houmma et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the spatio-temporal concordances of eight drought indices in two semi-arid watersheds in Morocco. The results show that the composite indices have the best agreement with reference indicators, and the VCI is better suited for assessing the seasonal profitability of the studied agrosystems.

An Integrated Multi-Risk Assessment for Floods and Drought in the Marrakech-Safi Region (Morocco)

Davide Cotti et al.

Summary: Multi-risk assessments are a helpful tool for policy-makers to reduce impacts from natural hazards. The study conducted a multi-risk assessment for the Marrakech-Safi region in Morocco, and found that a significant proportion of municipalities in the region face high multi-risk levels, with drought-related risks having the most influence.

Sustainability of Morocco's groundwater resources in response to natural and anthropogenic forces

Mohamed Ahmed et al.

Summary: Morocco is blessed with abundant freshwater resources, but the current usage is unsustainable. Through the study, it was found that groundwater resources in both northern and southern Morocco are currently being used sustainably, but groundwater levels in five basins are declining, highlighting the need for comprehensive policies to promote sustainable use of surface and groundwater resources.

Groundwater Depletion in an Urban Environment under Semiarid Climate and Persistent Drought-City of Marrakesh (Morocco)

Mohammed Analy et al.

Summary: The shallow aquifer in Marrakesh and its surrounding area has been experiencing a gradual decline in water table, mainly due to the hot semi-arid climate with low precipitation and over-pumping for various uses. The study reveals that the groundwater level has declined significantly in the last two decades, impacting 85% of the study area.

Climate change impacts on surface water resources in the Oued El Abid basin, Morocco

El Mahdi El Khalki et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impacts of climate change on surface water resources in Mediterranean countries, particularly focusing on runoff supply to the Bin El Ouidane dam in Morocco. Results show a future increase in evapotranspiration and a decrease in precipitation, leading to a significant decline in surface water resources and runoff. Management strategies for water resources and agriculture will need to adapt to these future climatic conditions.

Enhancing the success of new dams implantation under semi-arid climate, based on a multicriteria analysis approach: Case of Marrakech region (Central Morocco)

Fatima Ezzahra El Ghazali et al.

Summary: Water management is a major concern in arid and semi-arid regions, with various criteria and methodologies suggested for selecting suitable dam sites. This study used GIS/RS and MCA integrated with GIS/RS to identify suitable dam locations based on factors like slope, rainfall, land use, and lithology. The approach was validated by an existing dam, showing potential for identifying dam-construction sites globally. Unsuitable areas for surface water harvesting may still be suitable for groundwater recharge.

Summary: The study evaluates the performance of the MIT Regional Climate Model (MRCM) in simulating regional climatic features over NWAIP and provides climate change projections under different emission scenarios. Results show a significant decline in precipitation in the region, especially over Morocco's main watersheds, under continued anthropogenic forcing.
