Spatial characterization of non-material values across multiple coastal production landscapes in the Indian Sundarban delta

Significant reduction of carbon stocks and changes of ecosystem service valuation of Indian Sundarban

Summary: The Sundarban mangrove ecosystem is a highly productive and valuable natural resource, providing numerous goods and services to millions of people. However, in recent decades, it has been deteriorating in terms of quality and quantity. This research aims to investigate the ecosystem service values using satellite data, analyze the dynamic pattern of carbon sequestration, and identify the hotspots of ESVs change. The results show that the mangrove forest has the highest ESV and acts as an important carbon sink. Illegal human encroachment poses a significant threat to the mangrove ecosystem, leading to substantial loss of ESVs and carbon storage.

Assessment of vegetation, soil nutrient dynamics and heavy metals in the Prosopis juliflora invaded lands at semi-arid regions of Southern India

Summary: Prosopis juliflora is a dominant invasive plant species widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. The invasion has ecological implications and brings socio-economic benefits to the local community. Converting the invaded lands to silvicultural/agricultural activity is seen as a viable alternative to address food security, ecological imbalance, soil degradation, and climate change. The study examines coexisting vegetation, soil nutrient profile, and heavy metal concentrations in the invaded lands in Southern India. The results suggest the potential for silvicultural maneuvers prioritizing native flora.
