Developments in phase change material (PCM) doped energy efficient polyurethane (PU) foam for perishable food cold-storage applications: A review

Saurav Sarkar et al.

Summary: The usage of thermo-regulative phase change material (PCM) doped polyurethane (PU) foam (PU-PCM) as a building component in cold storage can help in reducing cooling load and promoting electricity saving. The synthesis methods, optimization of components, performance evaluation, and future research scope of PU-PCM are discussed in this review. Encapsulated PCM (EPCM) with organic-inorganic hybrid shell and paraffinic core in the temperature range of -10 to 15 degrees Celsius is found to be a suitable option due to its thermal reliability, adhesion to PU matrix, and thermal conductivity balance.

Role of copper foam on solidification performance of ice-cool storage sphere system

Xujing Lou et al.

Summary: This paper numerically studies the solidification performance of heat transfer in the ice-cool storage sphere system by adding copper foam. The results show that copper foam accelerates heat transfer and significantly reduces ice storage time with little impact on cold storage capacity. A higher porosity of copper foam is recommended to balance the total melting time.

Performance prediction on ice melting process for cold energy utilization: Effect of natural convection

F. Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of natural convection on the melting process of a horizontal shell-and-tube latent heat storage unit. The circulation vortex formed by natural convection is found to be the dominant factor affecting the overall heat transfer coefficient. Increasing the endothermic source temperature can advance the melting time of the unit, but the melting tendency of the PCM shows opposite directions due to density inversion and the real properties of ice and water.

Experimental research on the performance of ice thermal energy storage device based on micro heat pipe arrays

Zichu Liu et al.

Summary: The study developed an ice thermal energy storage device using micro heat pipe arrays as the enhanced heat transfer element, which showed excellent heat transfer performance and energy storage density. Compared to devices using circular heat pipes, the device with micro heat pipe arrays had higher cold energy storage power, energy storage density, and ice packing factor, attributed to its high thermal conductivity performance and conducive surface for adding fins for enhanced heat transfer.
