Deciphering the influence of TOD on metro ridership: An integrated approach of extended node-place model and interpretable machine learning with planning implications

Shiliang Su et al.

Summary: Using Shanghai as a case study, this paper demonstrates a novel approach to uncover the locality-specific influence of transit-oriented development (TOD) on metro ridership. The study finds that there is great spatial and temporal heterogeneity in the impact of TOD structural factors and neighborhood sociodemographics on boarding and alighting counts. The functionality factor of TOD has the highest importance, especially during peak hours in central districts.

Linking Public Transport User Satisfaction with Service Accessibility for Sustainable Mobility Planning

Giuseppe Inturri et al.

Summary: Improving the quality of public transport services is crucial for attracting more users, and monitoring user satisfaction data as well as finding correlations between PT accessibility, user satisfaction, and ridership are key to prioritizing service quality improvements. Through a case study on university students' mobility behaviors, important insights were gained for the correct planning and management of public transport networks by transport companies.

Traffic Noise and Inhabitant Health-A Comparison of Road and Rail Noise

Marcin Wrotny et al.

Summary: The article illustrates the negative effect of traffic noise on human health using data from European Environment Agency. It shows that road noise pollution often exceeds railway noise pollution and more than half of the population in many cities is exposed to noise levels exceeding acceptable values. Paris is identified as the worst city in terms of exposure to road and rail noise. Further studies are needed to characterize the effect of traffic noise on inhabitant health more accurately.

Increasing public transport patronage - An analysis of planning principles and public transport governance in Swedish regions with the highest growth in ridership

Jamil Khan et al.

Summary: The study on increasing public transport patronage in Sweden found that political support, well-functioning collaboration between organizations, and public support through citizen dialogue are crucial governance conditions for successful implementation. Effective implementation of measures relies on these collaborative conditions.

Addressing the public transport ridership/coverage dilemma in small cities: A spatial approach

Nadia Giuffrida et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a spatial approach to design new on-demand flexible transport services in urban areas, aiming to enhance public transport and reduce car usage. Results show that redesigning the existing bus network and integrating it with a flexible service can improve equity in transportation.

Urban transportation sustainability assessments: a systematic review of literature

Linda E. Karjalainen et al.

Summary: The research on urban transportation sustainability assessments is mainly focused on Europe and single cases, lacking qualitative methods and stakeholder diversity. A large number of indicators are identified in the articles, but there is significant variation in their use. The research field is fragmented and has not fully operationalized the concept of sustainability.
