Investigating the trade-offs between the supply and demand for ecosystem services for regional spatial management

Yuan Yuan et al.

Summary: Understanding the supply and demand characteristics of ecosystem services and their trade-offs is crucial for effective ecosystem management. This study evaluated the supply, demand, and trade-offs of multiple ecosystem services in Changzhi, China, and proposed an urban spatial management framework based on the trade-offs and importance of different ecological functions. The results showed spatial heterogeneity in the supply and demand of ecosystem services, as well as trade-offs and synergies among different services. The study identified spatial mismatches and deficits in certain areas, providing a basis for spatial planning and ecosystem management.

How much do we know about trade-offs in ecosystem services? A systematic review of empirical research observations

Kishor Aryal et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviews the trade-offs in ecosystem services over the past 16 years, revealing issues such as geographical bias, limited involvement of government institutions, and a focus on biophysical constraints rather than utility function divergence among stakeholders. It also identifies conflicting ecosystem services pairs, major drivers, and stakeholders of trade-offs, and proposes research trajectories to guide the future direction of sustainability science.

Driving factors of ecosystem services and their spatiotemporal change assessment based on land use types in the Loess Plateau

Xiaozhen Wang et al.

Summary: A study assessed the carbon sequestration, water yield, and soil conservation in the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2018. The results showed an increase in these ecosystem services during the study period. Precipitation was identified as the main driving factor for water yield, while vegetation index and slope played significant roles in carbon sequestration and soil conservation. The study highlighted the importance of land use in influencing the ecosystem services in different climatic zones.

Uncertainty of city-based urban heat island intensity across 1112 global cities: Background reference and cloud coverage

Kangning Li et al.

Summary: This paper quantitatively evaluated the spatiotemporal variations of urban heat island and the uncertainty of its estimation. The results showed that the modified equal area-rural (MEA-R) method and the first spatial and after temporal aggregation with threshold removal (FSAT-T) method provided better estimates. However, the different methods used to define the background reference and deal with missing data introduce uncertainty and affect the results.

The spatial relationship between ecosystem service scarcity value and urbanization from the perspective of heterogeneity in typical arid and semiarid regions of China

Rong Li et al.

Summary: The study found that demand-driven factors have the most significant impact on the scarcity value of ecosystem services in Ningxia, which has increased significantly in the past few decades. The scarcity values of ecosystem services such as air quality, waste treatment, soil retention, biodiversity services, and recreation and culture have shown a significant increase, while the different types of ecosystem services exhibit spatial heterogeneity in their scarcity values.

Precipitation dominants synergies and trade-offs among ecosystem services across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Junhe Chen et al.

Summary: The research in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau highlighted the significance of precipitation as the main influencing factor in the relationships among ecosystem services (ESs). It was found that the relationship between water yield (WY) and carbon storage (CS) was primarily synergistic, whereas the relationships between WY and meat supply (MS) and between CS and MS were primarily trade-offs. The geographically weighted logistic regression (GWLR) model provided improved calculation to explain the correlation between the relationships among ESs and the influencing factors.

Spatial interaction between urbanization and ecosystem services in Chinese urban agglomerations

Xiao Ouyang et al.

Summary: Urbanization in China's ten major urban agglomerations has shown a steady growth trend, with distinct differences in urbanization indicators and trends in ecosystem services. The study found that urban land expansion directly leads to a decline in ecosystem services, highlighting the importance of understanding the correlation between urbanization and ecosystem services for high-quality spatial development.

Linjing Qiu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of vegetation restoration on soil moisture dynamics on the Loess Plateau of China using earth system reanalysis data and the Community Land Model (CLM). Results showed that while the surface layer soil moisture responded positively to vegetation restoration, the subsurface and deeper soil layers had negative responses. Overall, there was a decreasing trend in soil moisture during the simulation period, with significant differences observed spatially and seasonally.

Menghao Yang et al.

Summary: This study compared and analyzed the trade-offs and synergies between four ecosystem services at different scales on the Loess Plateau. It found that most relationships between ecosystem services were synergistic and enhanced as the scale increased. Additionally, the strongest synergies or weakest trade-offs between ecosystem services were observed at the municipality administrative scale, with correlations varying spatially based on factors such as vegetation cover, annual average temperature, and construction land percentage.
