Cultivar-specific response of rhizosphere bacterial community to uptake of cadmium and mineral elements in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Shuangshuang Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a field experiment to screen rice cultivars with low Cd and high mineral element levels, analyze the quantitative relationship between Cd and seven mineral elements, and investigate the response of rice rhizosphere bacterial communities to differences in Cd and mineral uptake. The results showed that certain rice cultivars had low Cd absorption and high levels of mineral nutrients, while others showed opposite accumulation characteristics. The accumulation of Cd and mineral elements appeared to be associated with rhizosphere soil bacteria.

High dissolved organic carbon deposition is buffered by surface soil in a headwater catchment of a subtropical plantation

Xianwei Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the input and output fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and their impacts in a subtropical plantation headwater catchment. The results showed that dry deposition of plant-derived DOC was higher than wet deposition from precipitation, and soil-buffered DOC fluxes were significant in the catchment. The findings highlight the importance of considering plant-derived DOC deposition in carbon sink estimations.

Acidified Carbon with Variable Irrigation Sources Impact on Rice Growth and Yield under Cd Toxic Alkaline Soil Conditions

Niaz Ahmed et al.

Summary: Cadmium is a potential carcinogen that can be toxic to humans, plants, and animals. Using organic amendments can help reduce plant uptake of cadmium and increase productivity. Biochar can absorb cadmium but its high pH limits its use in alkaline soils. This study examined the effectiveness of acidified carbon in alleviating cadmium-induced stress in rice. The results showed that applying 1% acidified carbon improved plant growth and reduced stress at high cadmium levels.

Strategies for reducing cadmium accumulation in rice grains

Babar Hussain et al.

Summary: The high concentration of toxic heavy metal cadmium in paddy soils and its subsequent accumulation in rice grains and the food chain is a global environmental issue. Understanding the soil properties that affect the uptake and translocation of Cd in rice can help reduce its accumulation in grains. While various management practices exist to remediate Cd from contaminated soil, practical application is limited. Controlling soil pH and redox potential can reduce the translocation of Cd from soil to rice roots, and developing genotypes restricting Cd uptake can reduce its accumulation in rice grains.
