The Relationship between the Political Connections and Green Innovation Development of Chinese Enterprises-Empirical Analysis Based on Panel Data of Chinese A-Share Listed Companies

Qingyuan Yang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact and mechanism of political connections on the development of green innovation in Chinese enterprises. The findings suggest that political connections inhibit green innovation, particularly in terms of alternative energy patents and administrative supervision design patents. The analysis also reveals regional heterogeneity in the impact, with the manufacturing industry experiencing the greatest inhibition. The study further demonstrates that political connections influence green innovation capacity through their effects on R&D investment and excessive debt levels.

Global oil price uncertainty and excessive corporate debt in China

Xiaohang Ren et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of oil price uncertainty on the excessive debt behavior of Chinese listed companies. The results show that global oil price uncertainty can significantly reduce excessive corporate debt, especially among small, non-state-owned, non-high-tech, or non-energy firms. The study also finds that oil price uncertainty affects both demand and supply channels, with higher product-market demand weakening the impact and higher financing constraints enhancing the impact.

Investor-State Mediation and the Belt and Road Initiative: Examining the Conditions for Settlement

Mark McLaughlin

Summary: Despite the dominance of arbitration in investor-state disputes, there is growing stakeholder discontent with the current framework, leading to proposals for reform such as the introduction of investor-state mediation. The unique conditions of the Belt and Road Initiative may make mediation a more appropriate solution in some cases, even though its legitimacy and use remain limited in practice. Stakeholders have made efforts to enhance the legitimacy of mediation, but further reforms in treaty drafting, government organization, and foreign investor behavior may be needed to encourage its use.
