Does energy consumption, economic growth, urbanization, and population growth influence carbon emissions in the BRICS? Evidence from panel models robust to cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the relationship between economic growth, energy consumption, urbanization, population growth, and carbon emissions in the BRICS economies. The findings show that energy consumption worsens environmental quality through high carbon emissions, and economic growth is a significant driver of carbon emissions. However, urbanization and population growth have minimal impact on carbon emissions. There are bidirectional causal connections between economic growth and carbon emissions, energy consumption and economic growth, economic growth and population growth, energy consumption and urbanization, and economic growth and urbanization. Finally, a causal relationship from urbanization to carbon emissions is revealed.

To Achieve Carbon Neutrality Targets in Pakistan: New Insights of Information and Communication Technology and Economic Globalization

Kashif Iqbal et al.

Summary: In recent years, the impact of information and communication technology (ICT), economic growth, and globalization on CO2 emission in Pakistan has been assessed using a generalized linear model (GLM) and robust least square (ROBUSTLS) technique. The study found that economic growth accelerates CO2 emission, while the usage of ICT (specifically ICT-internet and ICT-mobile subscription) does not contribute positively to CO2 emission. Additionally, globalization has a positive effect on CO2 emission in Pakistan. However, ICT usage has the potential to boost economic growth and mitigate climate change.

The link between urbanization, energy consumption, foreign direct investments and CO2 emanations: An empirical evidence from the emerging seven (E7) countries

Kaodui Li et al.

Summary: The study found that energy consumption and urbanization are key factors triggering CO2 emissions in E7 countries, while foreign direct investment helps to reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, economic growth and population growth exacerbate CO2 emissions. The study also identified several causal relationships and proposed policy suggestions for reducing CO2 emissions.

How CO2 emissions respond to changes in government size and level of digitalization? Evidence from the BRICS countries

Lijuan Chen

Summary: This paper examines the impact of government size and digitization on CO2 emissions in BRICS economies, finding that government size has a positive impact on CO2 emissions in Brazil, India, and China, while digitization has a negative impact. The study also highlights the positive role of education and e-learning activities in improving environmental quality in these countries. Based on the findings, it suggests that BRICS authorities should focus on improving government expenditure efficiency and investing more in digitization to enhance environmental quality.

The composite impact of ICT industry on lowering carbon intensity: From the perspective of regional heterogeneity*

Hongye Sun et al.

Summary: The study finds that the ICT industry is the main force in adjusting carbon intensity. Despite constraint by the rebound effect, the net effect of the ICT industry shows a significant positive impact on lowering carbon intensity under the consideration of spatial dependence. Furthermore, compared with developed regions, the contribution of ICT on regional inequality of carbon intensity shows a higher share in developing regions.

ICT and environmental sustainability: Any differences in developing countries?

Lasme Mathieu N'dri et al.

Summary: The study finds that the use of ICT in developing countries can help reduce CO2 emissions, especially in low-income countries. However, the relationship between ICT use and CO2 emissions is not significant in relatively high-income developing countries. To achieve environmental sustainability, more emphasis should be placed on implementing ICT policies in the least developed countries.
