Exploring factors affecting the injury severity of freeway tunnel crashes: A random parameters approach with heterogeneity in means and variances

Amjad Pervez et al.

Summary: Freeway tunnel crashes can be more severe than crashes on open roads, but there have been very few studies on the severity of injuries in tunnel crashes. This study collected a comprehensive dataset of tunnel crashes in Hunan province, China and developed a random parameters model to explore the influence of various factors. The study found that factors such as curves, speeding, and driver age can significantly affect the risk of severe injury outcomes in tunnel crashes.

Motorcyclist injury severity analysis: a comparison of Artificial Neural Networks and random parameter model with heterogeneity in means and variances

Chamroeun Se et al.

Summary: The mortality rate of motorcyclists in Thailand is continuously increasing, posing a concern for highway administrators and having economic impacts. This study used motorcycle-crash data from 2016 to 2019 and compared different models to explore the effects of various risk characteristics on the severity outcomes of motorcyclist accidents. The findings revealed that factors such as male riders, riding with pillion, speeding, improper overtaking, alcohol influence, fatigue riding, undivided road, etc., increase the probabilities of injury or fatal crashes. On the other hand, non-injury crashes were more likely to occur on main/frontage traffic lanes, four-lane roads, during rain, involving collisions with other motorcycles, rear-end or sideswipe crashes, single-motorcycle crashes, and crashes within urban areas. The random parameters binary probit model with heterogeneity in means and variances outperformed the Artificial Neural Networks model in all performance metrics.

Investigating the severity of expressway crash based on the random parameter logit model accounting for unobserved heterogeneity

Fei Ye et al.

Summary: This study utilized an RPL model to explore the nonlinear relationship between explanatory variables and expressway crash severity, considering the potential unobserved heterogeneity brought by China's road traffic characteristics. Several factors significantly increasing fatal crash probability were identified, providing insights for better understanding of expressway crash severity.

Factors associated with consecutive and non-consecutive crashes on freeways: A two-level logistic modeling approach

Zhou Zichu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes data on 8779 crashes on the freeway network of Guizhou Province, China in 2018 to identify factors leading to consecutive crashes. The results show that different crash types, tunnel incidents, and foggy weather are positively associated with the occurrence of subsequent consecutive crashes, while single-vehicle accidents, truck involvement, and periods with poor lighting are less likely to incur consecutive crashes.
