Potential utilization of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the major European electricity markets

Yu Hu et al.

Summary: With the declining cost of battery technology, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have become increasingly attractive in European electricity markets. This study analyzes the potential utilization of BESS in these markets and finds that while energy arbitrage may not be feasible, BESS shows significant potential in providing frequency support services. The research suggests that improvements in market design could further enhance the potential of BESS.

The effects of wind power on electricity markets: A case study of the Swedish intraday market

Xiao Hu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the process of electricity price formation in the Swedish intraday market with a focus on wind power's influence. Results indicate that despite small trading volumes, the market operates properly, with intraday price premia responding primarily to wind power forecast errors and supply-demand imbalances. Forecast errors affect central and southern Sweden, but have minimal impact on the north, while unplanned nuclear plant outages do not affect intraday price premia.
