Scaling up nature-based solutions for climate-change adaptation: Potential and benefits in three European cities

The study finds that green roofs have the greatest potential to reduce runoff and increase biodiversity, while tree planting contributes the most to heat mitigation and greenness. The results of each scenario can support policy-makers in designing targeted NBS strategies.

Catalyzing sustainability pathways: Navigating urban nature based solutions in Europe

Summary: The concept of sustainability pathways, which involve multiple and overlapping efforts to change the status quo, has gained traction in the science and policy of global environmental change. In this paper, the authors argue that sustainability pathways can be conceptualized as bundles of related interventions, or "stepping stones," that generate momentum and overcome inertia to address sustainability challenges. Through empirical research in European cities, they identify 20 stepping stones that can accelerate the adoption of urban nature-based solutions.
