Scaling up nature-based solutions for climate-change adaptation: Potential and benefits in three European cities

Chiara Cortinovis et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the potential and benefits of implementing Nature-based Solutions (NBS) for climate change adaptation in European cities, and how they relate to the urban structure. The study finds that green roofs have the greatest potential to reduce runoff and increase biodiversity, while tree planting contributes the most to heat mitigation and greenness. The results of each scenario can support policy-makers in designing targeted NBS strategies.

Catalyzing sustainability pathways: Navigating urban nature based solutions in Europe

Laura Tozer et al.

Summary: The concept of sustainability pathways, which involve multiple and overlapping efforts to change the status quo, has gained traction in the science and policy of global environmental change. In this paper, the authors argue that sustainability pathways can be conceptualized as bundles of related interventions, or "stepping stones," that generate momentum and overcome inertia to address sustainability challenges. Through empirical research in European cities, they identify 20 stepping stones that can accelerate the adoption of urban nature-based solutions.

Citizen participation in the governance of nature-based solutions

Bernadett Kiss et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the current forms and implications of citizen participation in the field of sustainability. The study shows that tokenistic forms of participation dominate in nature-based solutions, but deeper forms of engagement can lead to stronger and more diverse social outcomes. The lack of trust among actors involved and inherent institutional structures limit deeper levels of participation, but strengthening the capacities of public institutions can partially bridge these limitations.

A general procedure to identify indicators for evaluation and monitoring of nature-based solution projects

Anne Roedl et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an easy-to-use procedure for selecting appropriate criteria and indicators to monitor and evaluate nature-based solutions (NbS) projects. The procedure is tested using a real case study from the Horizon 2020 research project CLEVER Cities, showing that it speeds up the selection process and is reproducible.

Values as leverage points for sustainability transformation: two pathways for transformation research

Andra-Ioana Horcea-Milcu

Summary: The literature on sustainability transformation suggests that values may act as leverage points, but there is a knowledge gap in how to engage with them in research. The distinction between linear and context-sensitive modes of knowledge production is key, as are the pathways for unleashing the transformative potential of values. This requires a nuanced understanding of the relationship between science, society, and the governance of research.

Governance models for nature-based solutions: Seventeen cases from Germany

Aude Zingraff-Hamed et al.

Summary: This paper provides an overview of implemented Nature-based Solutions (NBS) for flood risk management and mitigation in Germany, identifies applied governance models, and explores the differences between these models. The results highlight polycentricism as a commonality between projects, emphasizing the need for further research on traditional governance model reconversion and paradigm changes. The findings aim to inform future projects on the implementation of NBS for flood risk management by identifying successful practices from the past.

Stakeholder Participation in the Planning and Design of Nature-Based Solutions. Insights from CLEVER Cities Project in Hamburg

Alessandro Arlati et al.

Summary: Cities play a crucial role in addressing complex environmental and social challenges like climate change, with nature-based solutions (NbS) being recognized as part of the solution. Implementing NbS in urban contexts requires collaboration among various stakeholders, and this paper discusses the experiences and challenges in establishing and managing NbS-related processes in Hamburg under the EU-funded CLEVER Cities project. The research identifies key factors and roles of stakeholders in NbS planning, providing recommendations for future policy agendas in cities.

Assessing deeper levels of participation in nature-based solutions in urban landscapes-A literature review of real-world cases

Nikolett Puskas et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of nature-based solutions in addressing environmental and societal challenges in urban landscapes, emphasizing the need for wider and deeper community participation. There is evidence supporting deeper levels of participation beyond consultation and partnership, with landscape architects and urban planners playing a facilitative role. Practical insights and tools for facilitating participation are provided, with suggestions for future empirical research pathways.

Governance of nature-based solutions through intermediaries for urban transitions-A case study from Melbourne, Australia

Niki Frantzeskaki et al.

Summary: As cities increasingly utilize nature-based solutions, the role of intermediaries becomes crucial in linking different sectors, levels of government, and disciplines to facilitate urban transitions. Intermediaries play a dynamic role in enabling institutional spaces for mainstreaming nature-based solutions in cities, and must be understood as a fundamental governance activity for scaling climate adaptation planning. The contributions of intermediaries are critical in collaborative planning and governance for nature-based solutions in complex metropolitan contexts.

Co-creation Pathways to Inform Shared Governance of Urban Living Labs in Practice: Lessons From Three European Projects

Israa Hanafi Mahmoud et al.

Summary: The research analyzes co-creation pathways and shared governance mechanisms in three ongoing European projects, investigating stakeholder engagement scales, mechanisms, methodologies, as well as challenges and pitfalls in co-creation pathways. Key principles were identified from ULLs' experiences to enable the development of a forthcoming ULL 2.0 model and related innovation pathways for co-creating urban planning policies. Reflection on enablers and catalysts of co-creation processes inform shared urban governance as major takeaways from the research.
