Assessing rice production efficiency for food security policy planning in Malaysia: A non-parametric bootstrap data envelopment analysis approach

Mohd Norazmi Nodin et al.

Summary: The study found that the Malaysian rice self-sufficiency policy leans more towards maximizing output rather than saving resources. However, data shows that the average annual change of efficiency scores decreased during the analyzed period, both in input and output specifications.

Estimating the economic impact of the white root rot disease on the Malaysian rubber plantations

Oladokun Nafiu Olaniyi et al.

Summary: Research indicates that white root rot disease can cause severe economic damage to the Malaysian rubber industry. The economic impact of this disease is assessed using the Malaysian Agriculture and Plantation Greenhouse Gas Model, which predicts market prices and quantities for major commodities in the Malaysian agricultural markets. The study finds that oil palm plantations help offset the losses caused by the fungus, leading to rising natural rubber prices and impacting trade balance.

The current knowledge of black pepper breeding in Malaysia for future crop improvement

Choy Yuen Khew et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the breeding work of black pepper and emphasizes the importance of molecular breeding in improving its production. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) and gene editing are two significant approaches that are gaining prominence in black pepper breeding. Molecular markers have been extensively studied in germplasm evaluation, genetic mapping, map-based gene identification, and marker-assisted plant breeding. With the advancement of sequencing technology, genome editing tools, especially CRISPR/Cas technology, have become available and have the potential to transform the plant genome in a precise, efficient, and time-saving manner. This review summarizes the progress in black pepper breeding and the application of molecular breeding technologies for ensuring crop sustainability.

Evaluation of Long-Term Trends of Rainfall in Perak, Malaysia

Muhammad Faisal Hanif et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the spatiotemporal trends of rainfall indices in Perak, Malaysia, over the past 35 years. Results showed that most rainfall indices exhibited decreasing trends, particularly during the southwest monsoon season. Long-term trends indicated a decrease in rainfall during the southwest monsoon, while slight increases were observed during the northeast monsoon and intermonsoon seasons. Spatially, rainfall trends shifted from the western regions to the southeastern regions.

Changes in temperature extremes and their relationship withENSOin Malaysia from 1985 to 2018

Mou Leong Tan et al.

Summary: The study reveals a warming trend in surface temperature across Malaysia, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia, with significant increases in warm extreme indices and decreases in cool extreme indices. Urbanization has intensified the urban heat island effect, leading to faster warming in major cities compared to rural and highland areas. ENSO has a stronger impact on warm extreme indices than cool extreme indices in Malaysia.

Assessment of drought in SPI series using continuous wavelet analysis for Gediz Basin, Turkey

Cahit Yerdelen et al.

Summary: This study utilized continuous wavelet transforms to analyze precipitation data from 15 stations in the Gediz Basin of Turkey, identifying short and long-term drought cycles, and determining key change points through graphical methods and Pettitt's test. The most dominant periodicities affecting the trend were found to be between 24 and 48 months for short-term drought cycles and between 96 and 162 months for long-term drought cycles.

Socio-economic and environmental vulnerability to heat-related phenomena in Bucharest metropolitan area

Ines Grigorescu et al.

Summary: In this study, a multi-criteria vulnerability assessment was conducted in Romania, evaluating the socio-economic and environmental vulnerability to heat-related phenomena in urban areas using statistical data from local administrative units. The study resulted in the Social-Economic Vulnerability Index (SEVI) and Environmental Vulnerability Index (EVI), ultimately computing an integrated Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) using a Hull score method with an average of 50 and standard deviation of 14.

Assessment of the Dissimilarities of EDI and SPI Measures for Drought Determination in South Africa

Omolola M. Adisa et al.

Summary: The study examines the (dis)similarity between Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Effective Drought Index (EDI) in South Africa. The results show a positive correlation in Pearson correlation coefficient dissimilarity and periodogram of dissimilarity for both Drought Duration (DD) and Drought Severity (DS). SPI-1/EDI pair exhibits the highest similarity for DS, while SPI-6/EDI pair shows the highest similarity for DD. The study suggests that these two drought indices values are replaceable in certain rainfall districts of South Africa, contributing towards selecting appropriate drought indices.

The influence of ecosystems services depletion to climate change adaptation efforts in Africa

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: Climate change is a major challenge facing societies globally, with Africa being particularly vulnerable. Ecosystems play a crucial role in climate change adaptation processes by providing services that can mitigate the impacts of extreme events and disturbances. Efforts to enhance ecosystem services in Africa may support climate change adaptation initiatives and protect endangered ecosystems.

Comparison of Meteorological Drought using SPI and SPEI

Shashi Shankar Ojha et al.

Summary: The study assessed meteorological drought in the Punpun river basin in India using two globally accepted drought indices, the SPI and SPEI. The findings revealed an increase in drought frequency due to global warming, with intensity and duration of drought rising after 2004. Both SPI and SPEI showed a strong correlation on the same time scales adopted in this study.
