Alleviation of Cd-polluted paddy soils through Si fertilizer application and its effects on the soil microbial community

Hua Peng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of slag-based Si fertilizers on Cd-polluted paddy soils, soil microbial diversity, and functional properties. The results showed that Si fertilization significantly increased soil pH and decreased Cd accumulation in both the soil and rice plants. Powder form Si fertilizers exhibited the best alleviation effects. Si application increased soil microbial richness and Shannon diversity. Bacterial community composition variations were mainly explained by soil pH, NH4-N, available Cd, and Si contents.

Consistent responses of soil bacterial communities to bioavailable silicon deficiency in croplands

Lixun Zhang et al.

Summary: Soil bacterial communities are significantly affected by silicon fertilization and the depletion of bioavailable silicon in agricultural soils is a pressing issue. The structure of bacterial communities in Si-deficient soils showed significant correlations with reactive Si content and changes in bacterial groups related to nutrient cycling were observed. This highlights the importance of improving agricultural silicon fertilization for agro-ecosystem health and sustainability.

Untangling the effect of soil quality on rice productivity under a 16-years long-term fertilizer experiment using conditional random forest

Saheed Garnaik et al.

Summary: In this study, a long-term fertilizer experiment was conducted to evaluate the changes in soil properties and their impact on rice productivity using interpretable machine learning. The results showed that total potassium, protease, urease, and permanganate oxidisable carbon were the most important soil properties affecting rice yield.

Balanced fertilization over four decades has sustained soil microbial communities and improved soil fertility and rice productivity in red paddy soil

Jia Lin Wang et al.

Summary: The balanced application of chemical NPK and organic fertilizers significantly improved soil nutrient status and rice yield in red paddy soil. Soil bacterial and archaeal abundances, bacterial community structure, and specific keystones contribute to soil fertility and rice yield in response to four decades of balanced fertilization.

Soil bacterial communities interact with silicon fraction transformation and promote rice yield after long-term straw return

Alin Song et al.

Summary: Returning crop straw into the soil significantly increased soil bioavailable silicon and rice yield, and altered soil microbial community. Acidobacteria was positively associated with amorphous Si, while other microbial taxa were negatively related to organic matter adsorbed and Fe/Mn-oxide-combined Si in soils. These findings suggest that soil bacterial community and diversity play a crucial role in the biological silicon cycle in agroecosystems.
