EOSOLAR Project: Assessment of Wind Resources of a Coastal Equatorial Region of Brazil-Overview and Preliminary Results

Arcilan T. Assireu et al.

Summary: The EOSOLAR project aims to investigate the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer in an equatorial coastal zone using ground-based remote sensing instruments and micrometeorological towers. This paper describes the study area, methodology, and instrumentation of the project, and presents results of the first field campaign and instrument validation.

Effect of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation on the Madden Julian Oscillation Teleconnections in the Southern Hemisphere

Ana C. T. Sena et al.

Summary: The Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the main source of intraseasonal variability in the tropics. This study examines the influence of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) on the MJO's effects over the Southern Hemisphere, particularly in South America. It is found that during easterly QBO, the intensity of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and precipitation over Southeastern South America are intensified during the MJO phases 1 and 4. The extratropical wave train excited by the anomalous convection during MJO phase 4 is also affected by the QBO, with a stronger, better-defined pattern during westerly QBO.

Evaluation of multiple indices of the South American monsoon

Isabel C. Correa et al.

Summary: This article evaluates multiple methods for estimating the onset and demise of the South American Monsoon System (SAMS) during 1979-2018, showing a delayed onset date and stable demise date. The shortening of the SAMS primarily depends on variations at the onset stage, while different indices exhibit sensitivity to the spatial domain considered for SAMS characterization.

Impacts of the Madden-Julian Oscillation on the intensity and spatial extent of heavy precipitation events in northern Northeast Brazil

Francisco das Chagas Vasconcelos Junior et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatiotemporal variability of Contiguous Extreme Precipitation Events (CEPE) related to Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity in northern Northeast Brazil during the pre-wet season and wet season from 1979 to 2010. The research demonstrates the influence of MJO on the occurrence of CEPE in northern Northeast Brazil during different phases of the MJO.

Robust Solution for Boundary Layer Height Detections with Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: A robust solution for BLH detection with CDWL is proposed, retrieving MLH from TKEDR and SBLH/RLH from CNR. An intercomparison experiment with two identical CDWLs reveals that CNR may introduce bias due to instrument instability, while MLH from TKEDR remains robust.

A comparison of low-level wind profiles from Mode-S EHS data with ground-based remote sensing data

Livius Buzdugan et al.

Summary: This paper presents the estimation and verification of biases in calculated wind components using sodar and lidar measured wind as reference. The biases are mainly caused by errors in magnetic declination, neglecting aircraft pitch angle, and errors in sodar or lidar orientation. Results show a correlation between biases in meridional wind components and flight direction, with stronger biases observed at low wind speeds.

Wind Speed Profile Statistics from Acoustic Soundings at a Black Sea Coastal Site

Damyan Barantiev et al.

Summary: This study investigated more than seven years of high spatial and temporal resolution remote sensing data to analyze the characteristics of wind fields. The results showed an increase in nighttime winds at higher altitudes and lower speeds during the day, with analysis of the wind field characteristics using Weibull distribution parameters providing insights into the vertical structure of the coastal boundary layer.
