Phenotypic Characterisation for Growth and Nut Characteristics Revealed the Extent of Genetic Diversity in Wild Macadamia Germplasm

Summary: Macadamia is a recently domesticated Australian nut crop with a wide range of variation in growth and nut traits among its wild germplasm. Both genetic and environmental factors are equally important in determining the variability of traits. Positive correlations were found among growth traits and nut traits, except for kernel recovery, which showed a significant negative correlation with shell thickness. Principal component analysis separated different species groups based on their traits.

Summary: Recent national and international projects have focused on large-scale genotyping of vegetatively propagated crops, aiming to identify true-to-type plant material, detect synonyms, investigate genetic diversity, and create sustainable databases for research and breeding. Different DNA markers and next-generation sequencing methods have their advantages and disadvantages, with large-scale phenotyping methods lagging behind but crucial for understanding commercially important traits. Collaborative projects with broad-scale data collection are likely to produce more reliable results in the analysis of gene action and development of robust DNA markers.

Agromorphological Characterization and Nutritional Value of Traditional Almond Cultivars Grown in the Central-Western Iberian Peninsula

Summary: This study characterized 24 traditional almond cultivars in the central-western Iberian Peninsula from an agromorphological and chemical point of view, highlighting some cultivars with distinctive commercial characteristics such as high yields and quality fruit. The results showed that agromorphological and chemical analysis can provide reliable information on the variability in almond genotypes, contributing to the conservation of genetic almond resources in the region.

Morphological and Phenological Characterizations of Some Male and Female Promising Pistachio Genotypes from an Open-pollinated Population
