Occupational risk assessment of exposure to metals in chrome plating workers

Cristina Deuner Muller et al.

Summary: Exposure to xenobiotics during chrome plating process can pose hazards to workers' health, with hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) being classified as mutagenic and carcinogenic. This study evaluated the occupational risk of exposure to metals in chrome plating workers, finding increased levels of chromium in blood and urine of the exposed group. The exposed workers also showed signs of inflammation, genetic damage, and oxidative stress, indicating that other metals in addition to chromium may contribute to the observed adverse effects.

The link between deacetylation and hepatotoxicity induced by exposure to hexavalent chromium

Qingyue Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Cr(VI) induces liver injury in rats by inhibiting the deacetylation of Sirt1, leading to inflammatory response and apoptosis in hepatocytes. When administered Res as an activator of Sirt1, the deacetylation of Sirt1 is enhanced, resulting in alleviation of inflammatory response and apoptosis.

Nigella Sativa (Black Seeds), A Potential Herb for the Pharmacotherapeu- tic Management of Hypertension - A Review

Naina M. P. Maideen et al.

Summary: Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, myocardial infarction, and premature death, leading many patients to rely on modern antihypertensive medications with potential harmful effects. In response, some individuals are turning to traditional herbal medicines like Nigella sativa as adjuvant therapy due to perceived failures of allopathic medicines and safety concerns. Black seeds have shown potential antihypertensive effects in numerous studies, suggesting they could be effectively used to manage stage 1 hypertension and reduce doses of modern antihypertensive medications.

Hepatoprotective potential of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil against hexavalent chromium-induced hematotoxicity, biochemical, histological, and immunohistochemical changes in male rats

Fatma M. El-Demerdash et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to hexavalent chromium led to significant changes in hematological parameters, oxidative stress markers, and glutathione content in rats. Enzymatic antioxidants, liver enzymes, alkaline phosphatase activities, and protein levels were all adversely affected. However, administration of rosemary essential oil helped restore these parameters and improved antioxidant status, demonstrating its effectiveness in modulating hexavalent chromium-induced hepatotoxicity.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.

Correlation between Heavy Metal-Induced Histopathological Changes and Trophic Interactions between Different Fish Species

Bianca Onita (Mladin) et al.

Summary: The study found a significant correlation between the bioconcentration of heavy metals and structural changes in different feeding habit fish species, with carnivorous species being most affected and kidney being the most affected organ. Herbivorous species showed less extensive lesions, likely due to higher activated repair mechanisms and lower levels of inflammation as indicated by PCNA and TNF-alpha expression levels. Feeding behavior could be used for a more in-depth evaluation of aquatic environment safety and analysis of aquatic ecosystems based on data and statistical analysis.
