A Perspective on Time Toward Wireless 6G

Petar Popovski et al.

Summary: With the emergence of 5G technology, latency has become a crucial factor in wireless connectivity, serving as a proxy term for real-time communication requirements. This article investigates the general notion of timing in wireless communication systems, presenting a statistical framework that encompasses both latency and information freshness. It explores the relationship between timing and effective information generation, processing, transmission, and reconstruction. The article fills an important gap in the literature by providing a systematic treatment of various timing measures in wireless communication and paves the way for designing and optimizing next-generation real-time systems.

A State-of-the-Art Survey on Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Networks

Zhiguo Ding et al.

Summary: This article introduces the synergistic integration of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the sixth generation (6G) of mobile communication networks. It first explains the basic principles of both techniques and then discusses RIS-NOMA in different communication scenarios. Resource allocation, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in design, is crucial for the success of RIS-assisted NOMA networks. The article also discusses the security of RIS-NOMA networks, as wireless networks are often vulnerable to security attacks.

Theory, Analysis, and Design of Metasurfaces for Smart Radio Environments

E. MARTINI et al.

Summary: The term "metasurface" refers to an artificial surface composed of electrically small elements that collectively behave like a homogeneous boundary to an interacting electromagnetic field. Metasurfaces, or MTSs, are gaining popularity due to their technological simplicity compared to volumetric metamaterials. This article provides a review of the basic theory behind microwave MTSs, specifically as reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), and their potential for creating a smart radio environment. The article explores two different types of MTSs: surface-wave-based MTSs and nonspecular reflective MTSs. Simplified problems are used to effectively characterize the behavior of these MTSs and accurately design the radiated and scattered fields. The article also suggests using a ray representation to describe the scattered field in the Fresnel region and incorporate MTS descriptions into ray-tracing tools for network planning. Practical implementation examples are shown, and the challenges of electronic reconfigurability are discussed.

Massive metamaterial system-loaded MIMO antenna array for 5G base stations

Samir Salem Al-Bawri et al.

Summary: This article proposes an integrated massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) antenna system loaded with metamaterial (MTM) for fifth-generation (5G) applications. The article presents the achievement of duple negative (DNG) characteristics using a compact complementary split-ring resonator (SRR), a broad epsilon negative metamaterial (ENG), and near-zero refractive index (NZRI) features. The proposed mMIMO antenna consists of eight subarrays with three layers and operates in the 5G millimeter-wave band. The experimental results show that the recommended antenna loaded with MTM has good MIMO performance.
