A reward and incentive-sensitization perspective on compulsive use of social networking sites - Wanting but not liking predicts checking frequency and problematic use behavior

Niklas Ihssen et al.

Summary: The increasing use of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) has raised concerns about addiction. By applying a reward-based approach and drawing from drug addiction literature, it is suggested that cue-elicited urges for SNS use can predict excessive and problematic behaviors, while desires for use can be distinguished from enjoyment processes. This divergence in motivational and hedonic processes may provide insights into understanding compulsive SNS use and potential interventions.
