Occupational contact dermatitis: Retrospective analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group Data, 2001 to 2016

Summary: Patch testing is important for diagnosing allergic contact dermatitis. This study analyzed results from North American patients and found nickel and methylisothiazolinone to be common allergens. Some patients had positive reactions to allergens not included in the screening series.

Contact dermatitis associated with preservatives: Retrospective analysis of North American Contact Dermatitis Group data, 1994 through 2016

Summary: This study evaluated patch test reactions to preservatives by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group from 1994 to 2016, revealing that 22.3% of 50,799 patients had positive reactions to at least one preservative, with methylisothiazolinone 0.2% aqueous solution being the most common allergen. Linear regression analysis showed a significant increase in reactions over time only for methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone.

Summary: The Expert Panel on Cosmetic Ingredient Safety reassessed the safety of the MCI/MI mixture as a preservative in cosmetics, determining that it is safe when formulated to be non-sensitizing. Concentrations should not exceed 7.5 ppm in leave-on products or 15 ppm in rinse-off products.
