Reducing Trap Density in Organic Solar Cells via Extending the Fused Ring Donor Unit of an A-D-A-Type Nonfullerene Acceptor for Over 17% Efficiency

Jixiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The high trap density in organic solar cells is a major limitation for improving power conversion efficiencies. This study demonstrates that extending the donor core of nonfullerene acceptors from a heptacyclic unit to a nonacyclic unit efficiently reduces the trap density in the solar cells. This approach not only increases the mobility and inhibits charge-carrier recombination, but also achieves an impressive power conversion efficiency of 17.1% with a low nonradiative recombination energy loss.

Branched Alkoxy Side Chain Enables High-Performance Non-Fullerene Acceptors with High Open-Circuit Voltage and Highly Ordered Molecular Packing

Jiaen Liang et al.

Summary: The paper investigates two common strategies, alkoxy or branched alkyl substitution, to modify the properties of non-fullerene acceptor molecule Y6. By using branched alkoxy side chains to modify Y6, blend films with more ordered molecular packing and enhanced crystallinity are obtained. A mixture of Y6 and Y6-O2BO can linearly tune the open-circuit voltage (V-OC) of the devices.
