Towards an improved analytical framework to estimate active earth pressure in narrow c - φ soils behind rotating walls about the base

Fengwen Lai et al.

Summary: This paper uses finite element limit analysis (FELA) to study the failure mechanisms of retaining walls under rotation about the base (RB) mode, and presents an analytical framework that considers soil cohesion, soil arching effect, and shearing forces between adjacent elements. The proposed method is validated through centrifuge tests and parametric study, and two simplified design equations are provided for practical use.

A rigorous elastoplastic load-transfer model for axially loaded pile installed in saturated modified Cam-clay soils

Haohua Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel and rigorous load-transfer model for axially loaded piles installed in modified Cam-clay soils under undrained loading. The model is based on a rigorous deformation mechanism of the soil around the pile shaft during undrained loading, and is capable of accurately predicting the elastoplastic load-displacement response of the pile.

Progressive failure mechanism in granular materials subjected to an alternant active and passive trapdoor

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the progressive failure of overlying soil due to ground disturbance, identifying four typical failure modes and highlighting the degradation of arching effect on the load of underground structures. It concludes that classical predictions of structure load based on arching mechanisms may significantly deviate from real load, and surface settlement could be much larger than expected in cases of ground loss. Additionally, the study interprets the impact of previous ground disturbance on progressive failure mechanisms, providing insights for estimating lifecycle load and predicting ground deformation caused by engineering activities and environmental changes.

An elastoplastic solution to undrained expansion of a cylindrical cavity in SANICLAY under plane stress condition

Lin Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel elastoplastic solution for undrained expansion of a cylindrical cavity in SANICLAY under plane stress condition, highlighting the unique expansion responses compared to plane strain condition. The proposed solution is expected to provide a reasonable approach for interpreting pressuremeter test and modeling pile installation effects in natural anisotropic clays.

Evolution of active arching in granular materials: Insights from load, displacement, strain, and particle flow

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the progressive failure of active soil arching in a quasi-static particle flow using a transparent test apparatus and particle image velocimetry system. The evolution of displacement patterns, settlement, horizontal displacement, and backfill volumetric change were analyzed. The mechanisms of arching evolution and critical displacement for mobilizing the minimum load were discussed.

Undrained stability of active trapdoors in two-layered clays

Suraparb Keawsawasvong et al.

Summary: The paper presents numerical solutions to estimate the undrained stability of active trapdoors in two-layered clays under plane strain conditions. It examines the influence of parameters such as coverage depth of the trapdoor, thickness and undrained shear strength of the clay layers on the stability and failure mechanisms of active trapdoors. The results are presented in the form of dimensionless charts for designing trapdoor systems in two-layered clays with varying thicknesses and undrained shear strengths.
