False Data Injection Attacks Against Partial Sensor Measurements of Networked Control Systems

Zhong-Hua Pang et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of false data injection (FDI) attacks on partial sensor measurements of a networked stochastic system. A partial FDI attack strategy is presented, which injects false signals into the feedback communication channel to disrupt the performance of a Kalman filter based output tracking control system. The paper derives the stealthiness condition of the attack and its impact on the closed-loop system, which differs from existing work on FDI attacks against all sensor measurements. The research contributes to ensuring secure control of networked systems by protecting critical sensor measurements from FDI attacks.

Summary: Resilient distributed coordination control is studied on multiarea power systems with low inertia under hybrid attacks, including denial-of-service (DoS) attack and deception attack. The proposed resilient distributed scheme combines load-frequency control (LFC) with virtual inertia control (VIC), and uses a linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique to design the distributed resilient control gains. The validity of the theory is verified through simulation of a four-area power system.

BMI-Based Load Frequency Control in Microgrids Under False Data Injection Attacks

Hamidreza Javanmardi et al.

Summary: The article addresses the power fluctuation problem caused by integrating renewable energy sources into microgrids. A load frequency controller (LFC) is designed to provide constant and uniform frequency, mitigating adverse effects such as system instability and blackouts. A dynamic output feedback controller (DOFC) is proposed for LFC in microgrids, considering contraction observer for attack mitigation and formulating sufficient conditions in the form of bilinear matrix inequalities. The new formulation effectively transforms the problem into a BMI model, leading to a more accurate and less conservative solution compared to previous methods. Simulation results show the efficacy of the developed approach in reducing frequency variations significantly when compared with other prominent methods.

A Double-Benefit Moving Target Defense Against Cyber-Physical Attacks in Smart Grid

Zhenyong Zhang et al.

Summary: The article proposes a double-benefit moving target defense (dB-MTD) to protect the smart grid (SG) from cyber-physical attacks (CPAs) and gain generation-cost benefits. By perturbing reactances with distributed flexible AC transmission system (D-FACTS) to prevent stealthy CPAs on transmission lines, the optimal reactance perturbations are computed to maximize generation-cost benefits without sacrificing the protection performance of dB-MTD. Extensive simulations using real-world load profiles evaluate the impact of CPAs on the system operation and benefits obtained by dB-MTD in terms of D-FACTS deployment and generation-cost profits.

Arezoo Vafamand et al.

Summary: This article investigates the problem of fault detection and isolation in DC microgrids with nonlinear loads. A novel fusing unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for FDI is proposed to estimate the states of the system in the presence of faults. The proposed approach offers a low computational burden, is applicable for nonlinear systems and with multi-sensors and multi-faults, and offers a systematic approach to isolate faulty sensors. The results show that the proposed algorithm has a good performance in fault detection and isolating it and outperforms the recent methods.
