Challenges of Geotourism in South Africa: A Case Study of the Kruger National Park

Khodani Matshusa et al.

Summary: The rise of geotourism research in South Africa, particularly focusing on the case of Kruger National Park, reveals the potential benefits of geotourism to the tourism sector and natural resource protection, but also highlights seven key challenges: lack of packaging and marketing, inadequate infrastructure, security concerns, access to finance and markets, destruction of geoheritage sites, social challenges, and regulatory obstacles. These challenges may lead to negative perceptions about geotourism and hinder its development towards effective local social sustainability, especially for communities neighboring the park. This study expands the academic literature on geotourism challenges in South Africa and contributes to the theoretical understanding of geotourism challenges in Africa.
