Genomic insights into molecular adaptation to intertidal environments in the mangrove Aegiceras corniculatum

Xiao Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying adaptation to intertidal environments using the pioneer mangrove species Aegiceras corniculatum as a model. The research reveals a whole-genome duplication event, the importance of maintaining cellular environmental homeostasis, and preferential retention of key genes related to salt homeostasis after the duplication. Comparative transcriptomics show that genes upregulated under high-salt conditions are involved in salt transport and ROS scavenging. Additionally, the loss of heme-binding ability in homologues of DELAY OF GERMINATION1 (DOG1) in A. corniculatum may contribute to its crypto-vivipary adaptation.

LEAFY COTYLEDON1 expression in the endosperm enables embryo maturation in Arabidopsis

Jingpu Song et al.

Summary: The research found that LEC1 expression in the endosperm is necessary and sufficient for embryo maturation, and LEC1 protein is trafficked to the embryo to activate seed maturation. These results reveal the important role of endosperm in regulating embryo development.
