Determination of 18 Intact Glucosinolates in Brassicaceae Vegetables by UHPLC-MS/MS: Comparing Tissue Disruption Methods for Sample Preparation

Xiaolu Yu et al.

Summary: The study compared and optimized three tissue disruption methods for sample preparation, revealing limitations in processing intact GSLs in different plant tissues under the same microwave conditions, yet achieving good recoveries through methanol extraction. It emphasized the necessity of heating extraction when extracting GSLs from frozen-fresh samples.

Evaluation of Bioactive Properties of Lipophilic Fractions of Edible and Non-Edible Parts of Nasturtium officinale (Watercress) in a Model of Human Malignant Melanoma Cells

Sotiris Kyriakou et al.

Summary: This study chemically characterized and biologically evaluated watercress, finding that the edible part contained higher amounts of nutrients and phytochemicals compared to the non-edible part. The edible watercress showed higher cytotoxic potential against malignant melanoma cells, indicating its potential as an anti-cancer agent.

Assessment of Methodological Pipelines for the Determination of Isothiocyanates Derived from Natural Sources

Sotiris Kyriakou et al.

Summary: Isothiocyanates are biologically active metabolites released through enzymatic hydrolysis of glucosinolates, with properties such as anti-cancer, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. The isolation of these compounds from natural sources is crucial and depends on their chemical and physicochemical properties as well as the activation of myrosinase.

Melina Mitsiogianni et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the significant anti-cancer effects of isothiocyanates on melanoma cells, inducing an increase in intracellular reactive oxygen species and glutathione contents, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis/necrosis. Metastatic melanoma cells were more sensitive to isothiocyanates, showing higher levels of cell death compared to non-melanoma cells.

A Narrative Review on Therapeutic Potentials of Watercress in Human Disorders

Esmaeel Panahi Kokhdan et al.

Summary: Watercress is an aquatic vegetable that has been traditionally used to treat various diseases such as hypercholesterolemia, hyperglycemia, and arthritis. It contains primary metabolites like isothiocyanates, glucosinolates, vitamins, and bioelements which contribute to its therapeutic effects. Studies have shown that watercress extract can reduce oxidative stress, DNA damage, and cancer susceptibility, and also protect against liver injury caused by various factors.

Benzyl and phenethyl isothiocyanates as promising epigenetic drug compounds by modulating histone acetylation and methylation marks in malignant melanoma

Melina Mitsiogianni et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of phenethyl and benzyl isothiocyanates in modulating histone acetylation and methylation as a potential epigenetic therapeutic strategy in malignant melanoma. The results showed that both isothiocyanates induced cytotoxicity and influenced the acetylation and methylation status of specific lysine residues on histones H3 and H4 in melanoma cells by regulating the expression of various histone modifiers. These findings provide novel insights into the mechanisms of isothiocyanates in exerting their anti-cancer effects in melanoma.
