Expression of the W36, P5CS, P5CR, MAPK3, and MAPK6 genes and proline content in bread wheat genotypes under drought stress

Kiarash Jamshidi Goharrizi et al.

Summary: In this study, agronomic traits and gene expression levels were evaluated in different bread wheat genotypes under drought stress conditions. The results showed that the expression levels of certain genes increased and proline content enhanced under drought stress, especially in the tolerant genotypes. These findings suggest that these genes have the potential to be used for improving drought stress tolerance in wheat.

High night temperature during maize post-flowering increases night respiration and reduces photosynthesis, growth and kernel number

Belen Araceli Kettler et al.

Summary: In recent years, global daily night-time low temperatures have increased at a rate double that of maximum temperatures. However, there is limited research on the effects of high night temperature (HNT) on maize growth and yield. This study found that exposure to HNT resulted in decreased kernel number and growth rate in maize, as well as reduced net photosynthesis. There was also a negative relationship between night respiration and net photosynthesis, indicating that high night respiration may indirectly affect carbon balance and growth.

Spatial-temporal changes in meteorological and agricultural droughts in Northeast China: change patterns, response relationships and causes

Chong Du et al.

Summary: The study found that in Northeast China, there is a high frequency of meteorological and agricultural drought, with a significant positive correlation between the two, although changes in agricultural drought lag behind those of meteorological drought. A strong correlation between meteorological and agricultural drought was identified in cropland areas. The El Nino Southern Oscillation and Pacific interannual oscillation were important factors affecting drought changes in the region.

Phenylpropanoid metabolism enzyme activities and gene expression in postharvest melons inoculated with Alternaria alternata

Yujia Bai et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Jiashi melons exhibit better resistance to A. alternata infection compared to 86-1 melons, with higher activity and gene expression of C4H, PAL, and 4CL enzymes in Jiashi melon pericarp. This confirms the involvement of phenylpropanoid metabolism enzymes in resistance to A. alternata.

Attribution of meteorological, hydrological and agricultural drought propagation in different climatic regions of China

Yibo Ding et al.

Summary: The study explores the interplay between multiple droughts in different climate zones and seasons in China. Using different drought indices to represent meteorological, agricultural, and hydrological drought, the research identifies the propagation relationships among different droughts and the most sensitive season for drought propagation. The findings suggest that the propagation from meteorological to agricultural drought is more prominent in different seasons at the annual scale over China.
