A critical analysis of wastewater use in agriculture and associated health risks in Pakistan

Natasha et al.

Summary: Freshwater shortage and contamination is a major global issue impacting socioeconomic values. This review focuses on the use of wastewater for crop production in semiarid and arid areas, highlighting its potential as a source of essential nutrients but also its negative effects due to toxic substances such as heavy metals. The case study of Pakistan, which faces severe freshwater scarcity, examines the use of untreated wastewater in agriculture and its impact on soil chemistry and human health. The review provides data analysis and proposes solutions and future perspectives for addressing the challenges.

Optimizing textile dyeing wastewater for tomato irrigation through physiochemical, plant nutrient uses and pollution load index of irrigated soil

Jahidul Hassan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different stages of textile dyeing wastewater on tomato cultivation. Results showed that T8 (mixed effluent) had excessive heavy metals which led to severe soil salinization, while T2, T3, and T6 treatments had a positive effect on growth and yield of tomato due to lower heavy metal content. Further research is needed to assess the health risks associated with heavy metal accumulation in plants after irrigation with textile dyeing wastewater.

Recent Strategies for Bioremediation of Emerging Pollutants: A Review for a Green and Sustainable Environment

Saroj Bala et al.

Summary: Environmental pollution caused by xenobiotics and other recalcitrant compounds poses a significant risk to human health and the natural environment. Bioremediation, an effective technique for cleaning polluted environments, utilizes microorganisms to eliminate, degrade, detoxify, and immobilize hazardous wastes and pollutants. The goal of bioremediation is to degrade pollutants into less toxic forms. This review discusses the recent developments in bioremediation techniques, the breakdown of different pollutants by microorganisms, and the future of bioremediation in reducing pollution.

Heavy metal associated health hazards: An interplay of oxidative stress and signal transduction

Jagdish Gopal Paithankar et al.

Summary: The oxidative stress induced by heavy metals and its connection with different signaling pathways are complex, which may lead to a variety of health issues. Exposure to heavy metals/metalloids such as Arsenic, Chromium, Cadmium, and Lead can trigger oxidative stress and subsequently cellular and organismal responses, involving regulation of multiple signaling pathways.

Co-release potential and human health risk of heavy metals from galvanized steel pipe scales under stagnation conditions of drinking water

Yimei Tian et al.

Summary: The re-release of heavy metals accumulated in the drinking water distribution systems may pose a significant threat to water quality and human health. This study found that the main source of metal release under stagnation water conditions is the acid-soluble fraction. The chronic noncarcinogenic risk caused by soluble metals can be ignored under normal stagnation times, and there is a significant linear co-release correlation between calcium and manganese.

The role of different organic amendments to improve maize growth in wastewater irrigated soil

Saqib Bashir et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the detrimental effects of wastewater irrigation on soil health and sustainable agriculture, particularly in relation to heavy metal contamination such as cadmium. By using eco-friendly organic soil amendments at a 3% rate, the mobility of metals in wastewater irrigated soils can be reduced, leading to improved plant growth and reduced metal uptake by plants. Compost showed the most promising results among the tested organic amendments, suggesting its potential as a suitable approach for promoting plant growth in polluted soil.
