Effect of maternal age on primary and secondary sex ratios in the ectoparasitoid wasp Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae

Jing Li et al.

Summary: This study used microsatellites to investigate the effects of female age on the primary and secondary sex ratio of the parasitoid wasp P. vindemmiae. The results showed that the primary sex ratio decreased as oviposition days increased, while the secondary sex ratio increased. Self-superparasitism was found to be the cause of variation in the secondary sex ratio.

Arsenophonus apicola sp. nov., isolated from the honeybee Apis mellifera

Pol Nadal-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study reports a microbe related to Arsenophonus nasoniae, traditionally considered heritable bacterial symbionts of arthropods, infecting honey bees (Apis mellifera). The microbe was cultured in vitro and its genome was sequenced. This finding suggests a different mode of transmission for this microbe compared to other Arsenophonus bacteria that are typically found only in arthropods.

The microbiome impacts host hybridization and speciation

Asia K. Miller et al.

Summary: Microbial symbiosis and speciation have profound impacts on the biodiversity of life, and merging these two fields for future research is a neglected but exciting prospect in modern biology. Studies demonstrate that microorganisms influence animal hybridization and vice versa, with implications for a wide range of animals, microbes, and isolation barriers, hinting at a major new phase of study in which the microbiome plays a crucial role in reproductive isolation. The evidence supporting the impact of microorganisms on animal speciation has recently reached a tipping point, marking a significant advancement in scientific understanding.

Galleria mellonella as a Suitable Model of Bacterial Infection: Past, Present and Future

Guillaume Menard et al.

Summary: The interest in using Galleria mellonella larvae as an infection model has been increasing rapidly since the early 2010s. This model is now being seen as a robust alternative to conventional animal models, particularly for studying immunological and microbiological aspects related to pathogenic bacteria. Researchers are focusing on virulence of pathogens and development of new therapies, with an emphasis on standardization and monitoring host-pathogen interactions.

Transitions in symbiosis: evidence for environmental acquisition and social transmission within a clade of heritable symbionts

Georgia C. Drew et al.

Summary: This study describes a symbiosis between a member of the genus Arsenophonus and the Western honey bee. While the symbiont shares common genomic properties with Arsenophonus nasoniae, evidence suggests that the bee Arsenophonus deviates from a heritable transmission model, with evidence of horizontal transmission between bees.
