Phytoremediation of soil co-contaminated with heavy metals (HMs) and tetracyclines: effect of the co-contamination and HM bioavailability analysis

Weigang Zhu et al.

Summary: The co-contamination of soil with heavy metals and tetracyclines is a global environmental issue. This study found that tetracyclines increased the adsorption of heavy metals and phytoremediation improved the degradation of tetracyclines. However, phytoremediation also increased the bioavailability of heavy metals, emphasizing the need for continuous phytoremediation.

Long-term metal pollution shifts microbial functional profiles of nitrification and denitrification in agricultural soils

Lu Lu et al.

Summary: The increasing contamination of heavy metals in agricultural soils has attracted attention due to its impact on the nitrogen cycle and N use efficiency. This study investigated the interaction between heavy metals and nitrification/denitrification processes in agricultural soils neighboring a copper mining area and an electronic-waste recycling area in Guangdong, China. The results showed that heavy metal contamination affected nitrifiers and denitrifiers differently, with a decrease in potential nitrification activity and an increase in potential denitrification activity in metal-polluted soils. The composition of the bacterial community also changed in the presence of heavy metals. The study concluded that long-term heavy metal pollution can potentially impact nitrifiers and denitrifiers differently, influencing N functional genes and nitrification/denitrification processes.

Effects of cadmium addition on net nitrogen mineralization processes in the urban constructed wetland soils of a Chinese delta

Junhong Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that heavy metal Cd pollution significantly affects the nitrogen mineralization process in urban constructed wetland soils. Low concentration of Cd enhances soil N mineralization rate, while high concentration of Cd inhibits N mineralization. Cd impacts the transformation of ammonium-N and nitrate-N, and inhibits urease activity. Additionally, the abundance of ammonia oxidizing archaea varies under different Cd addition treatments.

Impacts of cadmium addition on the alteration of microbial community and transport of antibiotic resistance genes in oxytetracycline contaminated soil

Honghong Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that under the influence of heavy metals, the abundance and translocation of antibiotic resistance genes and potential human pathogenic bacteria in antibiotic-contaminated soil may increase, potentially affecting crops. Bacterial community succession is a major factor in the variation of ARGs, with the main host bacteria of ARGs mainly derived from Proteobacteria.

Binding of tetracycline on soil phyllosilicates with Cd(II) as affected by pH and mineral type

Huihui Du et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Cd(II) significantly affects the sorption of tetracycline on kaolinite and montmorillonite, especially at alkaline pH. Strong surface complexation between TC and Cd(II) on clay surfaces may reduce the mobility and bioavailability of TC in alkaline soils.

Dynamics of Soil Microbial N-Cycling Strategies in Response to Cadmium Stress

Haochun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the impact of cadmium on soil microbial nitrogen cycling and functional gene abundance, showing that cadmium can stimulate microbial nitrogen absorption in non-N-amended soils, while promoting nitrogen transformation processes in N-amended soils. Cadmium alters the microbial C/N metabolism, indicating a nutrient-based adjustment of microbial strategies to enhance metal resistance.

Plants and microbes' responses to the net nitrification rates of chemical fertilizers in soils

Azmerry Khanom et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the nitrification activity of chemical fertilizers in vegetable soils is influenced by plants, nitrifying archaea/bacteria, and comammox amoA bacteria. The abundance of these bacteria in vegetable soils is significantly higher compared to control soils and positively correlated with nitrification rates.

Tatiana Trifonova et al.

Summary: This study used 16S rRNA metagenomic sequencing to analyze the dynamics of microbiota in soil and examine the soil enzymatic activities after treatment with antibiotics. Results showed that urease activity decreased after antibiotic treatment while nitrification activity remained unchanged. Antibiotics had differential effects on catalase and cellulolytic activities. Overall, antibiotic administration did not significantly impact bacterial abundance and species diversity, indicating resilience in the soil microbial community.

Grazing weakens competitive interactions between active methanotrophs and nitrifiers modulating greenhouse-gas emissions in grassland soils

Mar Benavides et al.

Summary: Grazing significantly reduces methane uptake and increases nitrous oxide emissions in grassland soils over a 14-month in situ measurement period. DNA-based stable isotope probing (SIP) incubation experiments show that grazing not only decreases methane oxidation and nitrification processes, but also reduces the diversity of active methanotrophs and nitrifiers, weakening the potential competition between them.
