Summary: This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of Tn 7-derivatives transposons in MDR Proteus mirabilis strains isolated from anal swabs of chicken and swine in China from 2015-2020. Various novel Tn 7-derivatives and a new Tn 7-like transposon were identified, along with a new variant of a resistance gene.

Prevalence and characteristics of multidrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis from broiler farms in Shandong Province, China

Zixuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance characteristics of Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) in conventional broiler-fattening farms in Shandong Province, China. The results showed that the P. mirabilis strains isolated from these farms displayed a high level of antimicrobial resistance and carried multiple drug-resistance genes. The study suggested that P. mirabilis strains in Shandong may pose a potential risk to humans.

Identification of a novel genomic resistance island PmGRI1-STP3 and an SXT/R391 integrative conjugative element in Proteus mirabilis of swine origin in China

Juan He et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the genetic environment of antimicrobial resistance genes in Proteus mirabilis strain STP3 isolated from a diarrhoeic pig on a swine farm in Sichuan Province, China. The identification of two genomic islands (GIs) in this study suggested that genetic elements might be key mediators for resistance gene acquisition in P. mirabilis and that IS26-mediated rearrangements promote the diversity of GIs.

Characterization of TMexCD3-TOprJ3, an RND-Type Efflux System Conferring Resistance to Tigecycline in Proteus mirabilis, and Its Associated Integrative Conjugative Element

Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The emergence and transmission of novel antimicrobial resistance genes, such as the plasmid-encoded RND efflux pump TMexCD1-TOprJ1, pose a great threat to global public health by reducing the sensitivity of multiple antimicrobials. This study identified a pandrug-resistant Proteus mirabilis isolate harboring a novel tmexCD3-toprJ3 gene cluster located on SXT/R391 ICE, expanding current knowledge on the transfer mechanisms of tmexCD1-toprJ1-like gene clusters among P. mirabilis isolates. Further genomic epidemiology investigations are warranted.

Isolation, characterization and antibiotic resistance of Proteus mirabilis from Belgian broiler carcasses at retail and human stool

Zhongjia Yu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the isolation and characterization of Proteus mirabilis on broiler carcasses and found a high strain heterogeneity among isolates from broilers and human stools. Although the same strains were not shared, there was similarity in antibiotic resistance profiles, indicating a potential role of poultry products as a source for human infection.

Summary: This study characterized a novel MDR efflux pump gene cluster tnfxB3-tmexCD3-toprJ1b carried by Proteus spp. and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains from chickens, and found that these gene clusters are associated with antibiotic resistance and can be transferred across different bacterial species.
