Determining diffusion coefficients of coal particles by solving the inverse problem based on the data of methane desorption measurements

Qingquan Liu et al.

Summary: The diffusion coefficient is a key parameter used to evaluate methane diffusion behavior, often determined by analytical solutions and inverse modeling. Different algorithms such as MMA, SNOPT, and LM were analyzed for their effectiveness in determining the diffusion coefficient, with LM algorithm being recommended for its efficiency. It was found that analytical solutions for particles of different sizes were significantly larger compared to numerical solutions, and the numerical method demonstrated higher computing accuracy for small coal particles. This work also presents efficient techniques for solving diffusion coefficient-related inverse problems in COMSOL, prospecting the applicability of inverse modeling in complex gas diffusion problems.

Understanding competing effect between sorption swelling and mechanical compression on coal matrix deformation and its permeability

Chunguang Wang et al.

Summary: The deformation of coal during gas depletion involves bulk compression controlled by effective stress and coal matrix swelling/shrinkage induced by gas sorption/desorption. Introducing an internal swelling coefficient into permeability models is crucial for considering the complex interaction between fracture and matrix, and improving prediction accuracy. The experimental and numerical results highlight the importance of understanding the contribution of matrix deformation to fracture behavior in coal reservoirs.

An updated study on CH4 isothermal adsorption and isosteric adsorption heat behaviors of variable rank coals

Dameng Liu et al.

Summary: Understanding the gas sorption behavior of coals, different adsorption models, and the interaction between pore surface and CH4 molecules at different relative pressures are crucial for enhancing coalbed methane recovery. The isosteric heat and ultimate heat of CH4 adsorption in various rank coals were analyzed, showing a positive correlation with micropore surface area. This research may provide insights for the process of CH4 adsorption in coals.

A Coal Permeability Model with Variable Fracture Compressibility Considering Triaxial Strain Condition

Jun Tang et al.

Summary: Fracture compressibility and strain conditions play a crucial role in coal permeability evolution. The new permeability model derived in this study, considering variable fracture compressibility, showed more accurate results compared to the model with constant fracture compressibility. Coal fracture compressibility generally decreases with increasing effective stress and responds differently to changes in gas pressure and type.

Experimental study and production model of multiscale stress sensitivity in tight oil reservoirs

Bingbing Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the stress sensitivity characteristics of multiscale media and established a production prediction model based on experiments and modeling analysis. The results showed that the permeability decrease of main fracture rock was more significant under different pressures, and there was a power function relationship between permeability variation and effective stress in multiscale media.

Anisotropy of the effective porosity and stress sensitivity of coal permeability considering natural fractures

Kun Xiao et al.

Summary: The distribution of natural fractures in coal seams plays a crucial role in the anisotropy of coal permeability and stress sensitivity. A modified permeability model and anisotropic evaluation index were established to analyze the anisotropic evolution law of stress sensitivity. Results showed significant anisotropic permeability and stress sensitivity due to the complex heterogeneity of natural fractures in coal.

An evaluation method for types of low-production coalbed methane reservoirs and its application

Xiaoming Ni et al.

Summary: This study considers the influences of pores and fracture structure, fluid flow dynamics and resistance on the desorption, diffusion, and seepage of CBM from a system theory perspective. A new method to obtain evaluative parameters related to desorption, diffusion, and seepage was proposed. The types of low-production reservoirs were classified using an analytic hierarchy process with multi-parameter superposition.

Numerical investigation on mechanical properties of inhomogeneous coal under uniaxial compression and the role of cleat distribution

Xianzhen Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of cleat distribution on the strength and failure characteristics of coal under uniaxial compression using numerical simulations. Results showed that different cleat distributions led to variations in the strength and failure characteristics of coal specimens, revealing the failure mechanism of coal with different cleats.

Evaluation of enhanced coalbed methane recovery and carbon dioxide sequestration potential in high volatile bituminous coal

Oluwafemi John Omotilewa et al.

Summary: The study explored the CO2 storage capacity and CO2-ECBM recovery potential in Uinta Basin's Buzzard Bench area, finding that injecting 1.16 million tons of CO2 and sequestering 1.15 million tons over 20 years is feasible, with 13.95 billion cubic feet of methane recovered within the same period. Despite a 19% decrease in methane recovery due to permeability reduction by coal matrix swelling, the results demonstrated the feasibility of injection and production in the presence of potential permeability changes during CO2 injection.
