Hantavirus Induced Kidney Disease

Sheema Mir

Summary: This review article focuses on recent advances in understanding the mechanism, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hantavirus induced hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The immunopathological mechanism of kidney injury and the association between viral species and geographical location are discussed. The development of vaccines and antiviral therapeutics is crucial to prevent severe outbreaks of this emerging zoonotic illness in the future.

Innate Immunity to Orthohantaviruses: Could Divergent Immune Interactions Explain Host-specific Disease Outcomes?

Alison M. Kell

Summary: This review summarizes the research progress on the interaction between Orthohantavirus and the host innate immune response, and discusses the immune mechanisms of viral diseases in different hosts. However, many unknowns remain regarding the molecular mechanisms of virus recognition and viral antagonism.

Significance of bystander T cell activation in microbial infection

Hoyoung Lee et al.

Summary: Bystander activation refers to the activation of pre-existing memory CD8(+) T cells by cytokines without cognate antigens, which can have protective or detrimental effects on the host depending on the infection model or disease. Research has elucidated the mechanisms and immunopathological roles of bystander activation in various microbial infections. T cell receptor-independent triggering of T cells, known as bystander activation, plays an important role in homeostatic antimicrobial responses and immunopathology.

LncRNA NEAT1 Potentiates SREBP2 Activity to Promote Inflammatory Macrophage Activation and Limit Hantaan Virus Propagation

Yongheng Yang et al.

Summary: This study found that there is differential expression of the lncRNA NEAT1-2 in the early stage of HTNV infection, and revealed the relationship between NEAT1-2 and macrophage activation and HTNV propagation. The study also identified the SREBP2 factor associated with macrophage activation, and found that NEAT1-2 can regulate the activity of SREBP2 to limit viral replication. In addition, the study found a negative correlation between the expression level of NEAT1-2 and viral load and the severity of HFRS.

Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome: Literature Review, Epidemiology, Clinical Picture and Pathogenesis

Misbah Tariq et al.

Summary: Hantaviruses, including the Hantaan virus, can cause two types of infections in humans: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. HFRS is primarily endemic in Asia and Europe, with the striped field mouse being considered as the main host reservoir. Infection in humans typically occurs accidentally through the aerosolization of rodent excretions, leading to symptoms such as vascular leakage, acute kidney injury, and coagulation abnormalities.

Genomic Epidemiology and Active Surveillance to Investigate Outbreaks of Hantaviruses

Won-Keun Kim et al.

Summary: This article introduces the significant burdens posed by emerging and re-emerging RNA viruses and highlights the role of active surveillance and genomic tracking in identifying and characterizing viral outbreaks. The focus is on Hantaviruses, zoonotic pathogens causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. The study emphasizes the importance of high-resolution phylogeographic relationships between patient- and rodent-derived virus genome sequences to track infection sources.

The Presence of Circulating Nucleated Red Blood Cells Is Associated With Disease Severity in Patients of Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome

Jingang Zhang et al.

Summary: "This study revealed the presence of nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) in the peripheral blood of HFRS patients through single-cell RNA sequencing, with the count of NRBC correlating with disease severity, possibly due to impairment in the folate pathway. It was the first study to demonstrate that HTNV infection hinders RBC maturation, offering new insights for further exploration into the pathogenesis of HFRS."
