Gas- and Particle-Phase Products and Their Mechanisms of Formation from the Reaction of Δ-3-Carene with NO3 Radicals

Summary: Monoterpenes are a major source of biogenic volatile organic compounds emitted into the atmosphere annually. A study on the reaction of Delta-3-carene with NO3 radicals revealed the formation of first-generation ring-retaining and ring-opened compounds in the gas phase, while the particle phase consisted mainly of oligomers composed of acetal and hemiacetal dimers. These findings highlight the impact of monoterpene structure on the formation of multifunctional products and significant amounts of secondary organic aerosol.

Unified pH Measurements of Ethanol, Methanol, and Acetonitrile, and Their Mixtures with Water

However, practical challenges remain in this research field, including the selection of commercial electrodes and ensuring comparability between laboratories.

Aerosol pH and ammonium balance increase with remoteness, and these differences between observations and predictions may result in underestimating direct radiative cooling effects for sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium aerosols.
