Prevalence of Cancer in Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency

Wladimir Mauhin et al.

Summary: The study investigated the incidence of cancer in patients with ASMD and found a prevalence of 16.1%. The presence of cancer was associated with more severe ASMD, characterized by a larger spleen, lower lung diffusion capacity, and tobacco use. Three patients died from cancer, highlighting the importance of systematic cancer screening and avoiding carcinogenic substances in ASMD patients.

Inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase increases regulatory T cells in humans

Teresa Wiese et al.

Summary: Inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase through pharmacological means increases the frequency of Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells among human CD4(+) T cells, particularly in patients with major depression. This effect is more pronounced with antidepressants that inhibit acid sphingomyelinase compared to those that do not have an inhibitory effect on the enzyme.
