Personal monitoring of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure in mothers and young children in a South African birth cohort study - A pilot study

Aneesa Vanker et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a global risk factor for impaired lung health and increased morbidity and mortality. The MicroPEM and ECM are wearable monitors for personal exposure to fine particulate matter, which have reasonable rates of acceptability in mothers and children. However, high PM2.5 exposure in children is a concern and strategies to minimize exposure need to be strengthened.

A review of secondary organic aerosols formation focusing on organosulfates and organic nitrates

Wulve Fan et al.

Summary: Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) are an important component of fine particulate matter, with significant impacts on human health, air quality, and climate change. Organosulfates (OSs) and organic nitrates (ON) are key contributors to SOA formation, and their formation mechanisms are complex. Further research is needed to comprehensively understand the formation of SOA, particularly the contributions of OSs and ON.

Summary: In Sevastopol, even at the background station, the concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 particles in the air exceed the maximum permissible concentrations in the case of dust transported from deserts. The impact of both local sources and long-distance atmospheric transport depends on weather conditions.

Summary: Insufficient data on the chemical composition and emission sources of PM2.5 in the southwestern Mediterranean area prompted this study. The researchers collected PM2.5 samples in the urban area of Tetouan city, Morocco, and conducted chemical mass closure calculations and positive matrix factorization for comprehensive PM2.5 chemical analyses. The findings revealed the major chemical components of PM2.5, such as POM, SIA, and black carbon, as well as their seasonal variations and emission sources.

Abdulfatah Abdu Yusuf et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of low content rates of Mbwazirume bioethanol blends with gasoline in a modernized electronic fuel injection engine. Results showed that a 15% bioethanol blend induced increased combustion duration, leading to low emissions, high power, and efficiency. Different fuel ratios had varying impacts on engine performance and emissions, with E15 showing the most favorable results in terms of emissions and fuel consumption.

Ambient air particle mass concentrations in the urban area of the capital city of Yaounde (Cameroon, Central Africa): monthly and seasonal behaviour

Nasser Nducol et al.

Summary: Two size fractions of particulate matters (PM2.5, PM10-2.5) were sampled for 1 year at an urban site of Yaounde to describe pollution variations and determine sources. The PM pollution in Yaounde was dominated by dust sources and the correlation between PM2.5 and PM10 varied depending on the seasons. The annual mean levels were slightly lower for PM2.5 and exceedingly higher for PM10 compared to WHO limits.

Jovine Bachwenkizi et al.

Summary: The study found positive and significant associations between exposure to PM2.5 and its constituents and infant mortality in 15 African countries. Carbonaceous fractions and sulfate were identified as playing a major role in PM2.5-related infant mortality. The associations varied among countries and different subgroups, highlighting the need for targeted reduction measures in specific sources to reduce the risk of infant mortality.

Marc Fadel et al.

Summary: Organic aerosols in PM2.5 were analyzed in Zouk Mikael and Fiaa, Lebanon over a one-year period, showing higher concentrations of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) at Zouk Mikael than Fiaa, attributed to the presence of a power plant. Phthalates were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at both sites. The study suggested strong anthropogenic influences on the aerosols in both locations, with different patterns observed between winter and summer seasons.
