Ternary AGa5S8 (A = K, Rb, Cs): Promising infrared nonlinear optical materials rationally realized by one-for-multiple substitution strategy

Wen-Fa Chen et al.

Summary: Commercially available infrared nonlinear optical materials, such as diamond-like AgGaQ(2) (Q = S, Se), have large NLO coefficients but low laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs), limiting their widespread laser applications. In this study, a one-for-multiple substitution strategy was applied to diamond-like zinc-blende ZnS, leading to the successful synthesis of three new polar ternary crystals AGa(5)S(8) (A = K, Rb, Cs). These crystals exhibit large second-harmonic generation responses and wide band gaps, meeting the requirements for outstanding IR NLO materials.

Material research from the viewpoint of functional motifs

Xiao-Ming Jiang et al.

Summary: The 'functional motif theory' has been proposed to assist in the design of functional materials and understand their properties. Functional motifs play a crucial role in generating material functions and cannot be replaced without losing relevant functions. The theory categorizes microscopic structures into six types and emphasizes the importance of machine learning in predicting material properties. The development of reliable databases for material structures and properties is essential for uncovering functional motifs.

Heteroanionic Melilite Oxysulfide: A Promising Infrared Nonlinear Optical Candidate with a Strong Second-Harmonic Generation Response, Sufficient Birefringence, and Wide Bandgap

Ruiqi Wang et al.

Summary: This study confirmed that the heteroanionic oxysulfide tetrahedron can achieve balanced performance in infrared nonlinear optical crystals, including strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, proper birefringence, and wide band gap. The anion-mixing strategy was applied to discover melilite oxysulfide as a promising IR-NLO material system. These compounds exhibited unbiased performances of proper birefringences, strong SHG responses with phase-matchable ability, wide band gaps, and large laser-induced damage thresholds. The structure tolerance of melilite offers the possibility to improve the SHG response by tuning the orbital composition and hybridization near band edges.

Sr3[SnOSe3][CO3]: A Heteroanionic Nonlinear Optical Material Containing Planar π-conjugated [CO3] and Heteroleptic [SnOSe3] Anionic Groups

Jiankang Wang et al.

Summary: Inorganic heteroanionic materials have received increasing attention as potential nonlinear optical (NLO) materials due to their ability to simultaneously satisfy the necessary but conflicting properties of NLO crystals, such as large SHG response and wide band-gap. However, there has been limited research on chalcogenides containing different types of anionic groups. In this study, the first oxychalcogenide-carbonate, Sr-3[SnOSe3][CO3], was successfully synthesized, which contains two different types of anionic groups, [SnOSe3] and [CO3]. It exhibits fascinating NLO properties, making it a promising NLO crystal with a large SHG response, sufficient birefringence, wide band-gap, and high laser damage threshold.
