Experimental study on the effect of particle size on the shear characteristics of large-displacement soil exposed to heat treatment: Shear fluctuation and heat degradation

Suran Wang et al.

Summary: The shear characteristics of quartz sand on the basal face were studied through ring-shear tests. It was found that the shear stress fluctuation increases with increasing shear velocity and the smaller the particle size, the greater the residual shear strength.

Applicability of discrete element method with spherical and clumped particles for constitutive study of granular materials

Tongming Qu et al.

Summary: This study compares DEM simulations with experimental granular materials in terms of deviatoric stress, volumetric behavior, critical state behavior, stress-dilatancy relationship, and the evolution of principal stress ratio against axial strain. The results show that DEM with spherical or clumped particles can qualitatively describe some macroscopic features of granular materials, but there are qualitative deviations in terms of stress-dilatancy behavior and principal stress ratio, which are critical for constitutive modeling.

DEM simulation of geotextile-geomembrane interface direct shear test considering the interlocking and wearing processes

Shi-Jin Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscale mechanical behaviors of the interface between geotextiles and geomembranes. The results reveal that the bonding level of asperities greatly affects the interlocking effect, and the inter-fiber bonding level has a significant influence on the interface shear behavior of textured geomembranes with strong asperities. Additionally, a larger inter-particle frictional coefficient enhances the shear strength and reduces post-peak levels.

Shear behaviours of cohesionless mixed soils using the DEM: The influence of coarse particle shape

Yangui Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that a decrease in the roundness of coarse particles can increase the peak friction angle and critical friction angle of cohesionless mixed soils. It was also discovered that the roundness of coarse particles hardly affects the classification of cohesionless mixed soils, and that the main forms of coarse-coarse contacts were discovered when these soils change to an interactive-underfilled structure at the critical state.

Shear band evolution phenomena in direct shear test modelled with DEM

M. Nitka et al.

Summary: The direct shear test is widely used in geotechnical engineering for measuring the shear properties of soil. This study focuses on the micro behavior of cohesionless sand in direct shear box during geotechnical tests, using numerical simulations and laboratory comparisons to investigate its properties.
