Mineralogy of Particulate Suspended Matter of the Severnaya Dvina River (White Sea, Russia)

Vyacheslav V. Gordeev et al.

Summary: This paper presents a 4-year investigation of the suspended sediment mineral composition in the Severnaya Dvina River. The study found that clay minerals were dominant in the river water, accounting for around 90% of the composition, while silt was present in lower quantities. The distribution of minerals varied with different grain size fractions, with coarse fractions mainly found in the main stream of the river and absent near the river-sea boundary. Quartz and plagioclase were the prevalent clastic minerals, while smectite and illite were the major clay minerals. The study also revealed that the mineral contents did not change much over the year, with slightly higher quantities of clastic minerals during periods of high water in spring and autumn.

Trace Elements in Sediments of Two Lakes in the Valley of the Middle Courses of the Ob River (Western Siberia)

Vladimir P. Shevchenko et al.

Summary: Lake sediments serve as natural archives for reconstructing past environmental conditions, and this study focuses on the poorly studied lakes in the boreal region of Siberia. Sediment cores from two lakes in the Ob River valley were analyzed, revealing differences in sedimentation rates and elemental composition between the lakes. The sediments also show signs of diagenesis and authigenic mineral formation, as well as recent input of anthropogenic pollutants.

Element transport in the Taz River, western Siberia

Oleg S. Pokrovsky et al.

Summary: This study quantified the annual export fluxes and seasonal variability of dissolved carbon, nutrient, and metals in the Taz River in the Russian subarctic region. Three groups of solutes were identified, each with different sources and dependence on water discharge. Similar to other Arctic rivers, spring flood was a major contributor to annual output. The study also found that the presence of suboxic zones may significantly affect the concentrations of certain metals in surrounding waters.

Sizable carbon emission from the floodplain of Ob River

Ivan V. Krickov et al.

Summary: This study highlights the seasonal carbon emissions and water area fluctuation in the Ob River floodplain, showing the significant impact of dissolved organic carbon on CO2 concentrations and fluxes. The floodplain may play a larger role in total C emissions, especially during flood years and in the northern regions of the Ob River basin.

Major and Trace Elements in Water and Suspended Matter of the Northern Dvina River and Their Annual Discharge into the White Sea

V. V. Gordeev et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of C-org and Fe in the water of the Northern Dvina River exceed the global average by 3-5 times, primarily due to the specific features of the catchment basin (such as widely spread bogs). The concentrations of elements in the suspended matter of the river are similar to the global average, with the exception of C-org and P concentrations.

Carbon emission from Western Siberian inland waters

Jan Karlsson et al.

Summary: High-latitude regions, particularly Western Siberia, play a crucial role in the carbon cycle and climate system. Emission of carbon from inland waters, such as rivers and lakes, exceeds carbon export to the Arctic Ocean and is a major contributor to the regional carbon balance. This highlights the importance of coupled land-water studies in understanding the contemporary carbon cycle and its response to warming.

Seasonal and Inter Annual Variations between Concentrations and Fluxes of Dissolved and Particulate Organic Carbon, Iron and Manganese from the Northern Dvina River to the White Sea

V. V. Gordeev et al.

Summary: The paper presents new data on concentrations and fluxes of organic carbon, iron, and manganese in waters of the Northern Dvina River mouth area, collected in a four-year project. Seasonal variations and relationships between dissolved and particulate forms of elements were established, with more than half of annual fluxes transported to the sea during the spring flood. Significantly variations were observed between element concentrations and fluxes in different years.
