Interplay between Asian Monsoon and Tides Affects the Plume Dispersal of the New Hu-Wei River off the Coast of Midwest Taiwan

Chia-Ying Ho et al.

Summary: Numerical model experiments were conducted to study the interaction of river-forced, tide-generating, and monsoon-driven water motions in the coupled estuary-shelf system, assessing the impact of different river discharges on the pollution of the industrial harbor. The results showed that the mechanism of contaminating harbor waters was suppressed under strong Asian monsoons, while the southwest monsoon favored pushing plumes into the harbor. This study provides insights into the complex dynamics of river plumes in industrial harbors under the influence of various environmental factors.

The Characteristics of Organic Carbon in the Offshore Sediments Surrounding the Leizhou Peninsula, China

Jia Xia et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to analyze seafloor sediments from the offshore region surrounding the Leizhou Peninsula. The results showed lower organic carbon content compared to other offshore regions in China, indicating a dominant marine authigenic source. The abundance and distribution of organic matter were influenced by various factors.

Spatial distribution and risk assessment of metal(loid)s in marine sediments in the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea

Hui Zheng et al.

Summary: The study collected 74 surface sediment samples from the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea to analyze the content of metal(loid)s (As, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cr) and their relationship with pH and watersoluble organic carbon content. The results showed that most of the metal(loid)s hotspots were found in the Beaufort Sea region, with Cd being the most contaminated metal. The ecological risk assessment revealed low risks for As, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cr, except for Cd.

The geochemical and environmental characteristics of trace metals in surface sediments of the river estuarine mouths around the Taiwan Island and the Taiwan Strait

Tien Hsi Fang et al.

Summary: This study examined the trace metals species in surface sediments of the Taiwanese river estuarine mouths and the Taiwan Strait using a sequential extraction method. Based on the metal species present in sediments, trace metals can be divided into three groups. In addition, the total concentrations of trace metals in the analyzed sediments seem to be influenced by several factors. The metals contamination status assessed by three environmental indices suggests minor contamination by trace metals, with a few exceptions at some stations.

Distribution of Geochemical Species of P, Fe and Mn in Surface Sediments in the Eutrophic Estuary, Northern Taiwan

Tien-Hsi Fang et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the sediments in Danshuei River Estuary are moderately polluted by phosphorus, with P-CDB and P-DET being the dominant fractions of phosphorus. Iron (Fe) in sediment mainly existed in the reducible fraction, while manganese (Mn) distribution was more evenly balanced. Additionally, total organic carbon (TOC) content and grain size play crucial roles in influencing the distribution of sedimentary phosphorus.
