High Retention and Purification of Bromelain Enzyme (Ananas comosus L. Merrill) from Pineapple Juice Using Plain and Hollow Polymeric Membranes Techniques

Felix M. Carbajal Gamarra et al.

Summary: This study aimed to extract bromelain enzyme from pineapple juice using ultrafiltration technology and characterize its properties. The results showed that under the best operating conditions, the plain membrane separation process could recover 85-87% of bromelain activity. Ultrafiltration also demonstrated the ability to retain the proteolytic activity of bromelain.

Techno-ecological synergies of hydropower plants: Insights from GHG mitigation

Xincong Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the greenhouse gas emissions of 34 hydropower plants in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River using a life cycle assessment approach. The results show that emissions from ecosystem restoration contribute to the total emissions of the hydropower plants. Large hydropower plants have a higher carbon footprint compared to small ones, and all the hydropower plants are unsustainable at the local scale.

A review of how life cycle assessment has been used to assess the environmental impacts of hydropower energy

Eskinder Gemechu et al.

Summary: Hydropower is an important renewable energy source, but there is controversy over whether it is carbon-neutral like solar and wind power. Research shows that the characteristics of hydropower projects can lead to significant greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reviews the inconsistencies in using life cycle assessment for hydropower projects, particularly in accurately estimating and modeling reservoir greenhouse gas emissions.

Application of neural network to simulate the behavior of hospitalizations and their costs under the effects of various polluting gases in the city of Sao Paulo

Amanda Carvalho Miranda et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish an artificial neural network to predict hospitalization and costs for respiratory diseases based on the concentration of pollutant gases. Results showed that the RBF neural network was the most suitable for the experimental data, providing insights for government healthcare budget decision-making.

Modeling and optimization of reactive cotton dyeing using response surface methodology combined with artificial neural network and particle swarm techniques

Jorge Marcos Rosa et al.

Summary: This work investigates the modeling and optimization of conditions for obtaining blue color intensities in the dyeing cotton process with RB5 using RSM, ANN, and PSO. The results show that all factors have a considerable effect on K S-1, and the combination of PSO with MLP-ANN provides optimized conditions for achieving blue colors with the lowest production costs.

Reuse of water and materials as a cleaner production practice in the textile industry contributing to blue economy

Geraldo Cardoso de Oliveira Neto et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the eco-efficiency of a textile industry that implemented cleaner production practices for water reuse and minimization of water and material usage aligned with the Blue Economy principles. Data was collected through a case study approach involving observation, documental analysis, and interviews, contributing to theory by relating cleaner production and Blue Economy. The study offers a real case of cleaner production and Blue Economy strategy, leading to significant environmental impacts reduction.

Clean Production of Biofuel from Waste Cooking Oil to Reduce Emissions, Fuel Cost, and Respiratory Disease Hospitalizations

Jose Carlos Curvelo Santana et al.

Summary: The study proposes the use of environmental cost accounting principles to produce biodiesel from waste frying oil to reduce emissions, fuel costs, and hospitalizations for respiratory diseases. By switching to biodiesel from fossil fuels, significant reductions in respiratory disease hospitalizations and costs were observed in Sao Paulo city. The sale of excess biodiesel, carbon credits, and glycerine could generate approximately $300 million in annual profits.
