Predicting the effect of dissolved humic acid on sorption of benzotriazole to biochar

Lin Wu et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter has dual roles in affecting the sorption properties of biochar for organic contaminants. On one hand, it inhibits the adsorption of contaminants by competing for sites and/or blocking pores. On the other hand, it promotes the partitioning of contaminants by serving as an additional partitioning phase. A modified dual-mode model that includes the concentration of dissolved organic matter can predict the effect on sorption properties.

Effect of hydrothermal pretreatment on pyrolyzed sludge biochars for tetracycline adsorption

Weisheng Chen et al.

Summary: The research compared the adsorption performance of two biochars derived from activated sludge in the treatment of tetracycline, finding that hydrothermal pretreatment can enhance the specific surface area and pore volume, leading to increased adsorption capacity. The spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process involves multi-layer adsorption and chemical adsorption, with mechanisms including pore filling, electrostatic force, hydrogen bond, and pi-pi interaction. The higher adsorption capacity of one biochar is attributed to more adsorption sites provided by its specific surface area and pore volume, with pi-pi interaction playing a major role.
