Modeling the Mixing Phenomenon in Water Distribution Networks: A State-of-the-Art Review

Reza Yousefian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a state-of-the-art review on modeling the mixing phenomenon of junctions in water distribution systems. It discusses the basic concepts and governing equations of the mixing phenomenon, highlighting the limitations of the complete mixing simplifying assumption used in existing modeling tools. Various incomplete mixing models are described, and an attempt is made to determine the most suitable mixing model for specific urban water distribution networks. The paper concludes by proposing potential future developments in modeling the mixing phenomenon.

Flocculating properties of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid-co-allylamine polyampholytic copolymers

K. Zh. Abdiyev et al.

Summary: In this study, AMPS-AA copolymers were successfully synthesized by free radical polymerization, and their structure and composition were confirmed by various analytical techniques. The flocculation performance of the copolymers in Fe(OH)3 hydrosol was evaluated, demonstrating their ability to significantly decrease the concentration of Fe3+ ions. Furthermore, the concentration of the AMPS-AA copolymer was found to have a significant impact on the electropotential and particle size of the hydrosol.

Water Quality Audit in Drinking Water Distribution Networks

Surachai Lipiwattanakarn et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of a free residual chlorine (FRC) mass audit as a tool for water quality management in water distribution networks. By applying this concept to a real network, it is discovered that the percentage of FRC mass losses is higher than the percentage of water losses due to decay by reactions. Three performance indicators are proposed to assess FRC losses, safety, and reliability of water distribution systems in terms of water quality.

Modeling Bacterial Regrowth and Trihalomethane Formation in Water Distribution Systems

Gopinathan R. Abhijith et al.

Summary: A mechanistic model describing the interrelationship between chlorine, total organic carbon (TOC), and bacteria in water distribution systems was developed to analyze water quality variations. Results showed that increasing free chlorine concentration and reducing TOC at the source can decrease bacterial activity but increase Trihalomethane (THM) formation. Model outputs are sensitive to operating conditions and network characteristics.

Revisiting the Water Quality Sensor Placement Problem: Optimizing Network Observability and State Estimation Metrics

Ahmad F. Taha et al.

Summary: This paper presents a computational method for optimal placement of Water Quality (WQ) sensors in Water Distribution Networks (WDN) that considers the overlooked metric of state estimation and network-wide observability of the WQ dynamics. The algorithm takes into account the time-varying nature of WQ dynamics due to changes in the hydraulic profile. Detailed case studies are provided, highlighting key findings, observations, and recommendations for WDN operators.

Assessing Data Adequacy for Determining Utility-Specific Water Loss Reduction Standards

Amanda M. Rupiper et al.

Summary: The research analyzed available data sets to determine if they are adequate for creating individually tailored water loss reduction regulations. The study found that the resulting standards may not be representative of individual utilities and that annual data variability may be greater than a proposed reduction. It is recommended that entities considering similar individual water loss reduction targets consider timing, data collection tools, and data selection when developing utility-specific real loss reduction policies.

Energy Balance in Wastewater Systems with Energy Recovery: A Portuguese Case Study

Catarina Jorge et al.

Summary: This study utilizes mathematical modeling to analyze the energy balance in wastewater systems and discovers that the total inflow intrinsic energy is a significant component of the total energy in the system. There is a notable difference in total input energy between the wet and dry seasons, primarily due to undue inflows. The potential for energy recovery depends on available head and flow rate, with a project payback period of 4 years in the specific case.
